This sturdy beer is strong both in taste and alcohol content (9%), boasting undeniably appealing flavours. The people of Montignies-sur-Roc, which lies to the south of Mons in the province of Hainaut, are known locally as Montagnards. It seemed perfectly natural then for a beer brewed in the village to be named La Montagnarde. Enlivened by a very sharp bouquet of fruitiness and spiciness, it has a stark taste, somewhere between intense bitterness and dreamy caramel. Absolutely sugar-free, this pure malt beer plays with a variety of flavours that soften the bitterness. There is a pepperiness at the back of the mouth and a tingling on the tongue. Its qualities continue to develop in the mouth, each element of its flavour having the chance to express itself individually. It is very active in the glass too, giving it a generous, long-lasting head. Its long finish highlights the ever-present bitterness, with a little less of the caramel. The finale evokes a kind of sugar-free gingerbread.
In 2019 the new 1979 label was introduced to commemorate the 40th jubilee of the brewery.

A copper beer with a very big and blond head. Aroma is complex and interesting, fruits, dark fruits, some bananas, ripe fruits, yeast, spices and some flowers; rich and same time also light and fruitfull aroma. Taste is fruitfull, caramell, spices, aftertaste is dryer, herbal and spicy. Full- bodied, nice balancing carbonation, thus not heavy. Very complex and tastefull beer, enough of challenges until the empty glass.

Hazy light copper colour. Lots of gunk coming out already halfway through the pour which seems to kill the head. Has a strange flavour with some vegetables, almond syrup. Overall very sweet and not well balanced.

This has a lot in common with Abbaye des Rocs. Smells sweet, sugary and pours with thick chunks of floating yeast. Not much head on the pour. Smells like grapes, raisins, plum. Aftertaste is actually pretty light on this one but the mouthful has some tanginess, some sweetness and the dark raisin flavours. Bottle from The Only Cafe.

2*330 ml bottles bought in a mixpack and shared at tasting. Pours amber with a frothy off-white head that slowly dissipates while leaving some lacing on the glass. Smell is sweet with yeasty esters, caramel, plums and mandarin oranges. Taste is sweet, malty and metallic with sweet tropical fruits, bread, plums and red grapes. Mouthfeel is round and medium bodied. Finish is sweet and metallic with sweet fruits and hay.

33cl Bottle: New Years Day, in a bar on the Grand Place in Mons, Belgium. The body had an orange hue, a slight hazy mistiness prevented me seeing through the glass; small head which became a collar and a wisp after my second sip. Although I found some citrus esters in the nose and yeast aromas the overriding smells were sweeter: summer fruits and a caramel like maltiness. I thought the taste on the sweet side, caramel and toasted fruit cake: the yeast tries to come through as well, but no real hop input flavour wise. The alcohol content is well disguised, the sweetness being the only hint that this might be on the strong side. Overall too sweet, it does however slip down very nicely: one is enough for me in a session though.
