Quadrupel Ale

”Do you know what dwells in a glass?” asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen's The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass...

This may well be called the sixth glass, but it was only my second (and last) beer of the evening on 17th January 2022 while staying with my daughter in Laguna Hills, California. Deep amber body, mahogany maybe; the head a tanned affair. Malty, boozy and fairly sweet from start to finish, the aroma hinting at what was to come. Pleasant nightcap.

Bottle, 0.355l. Aroma of caramel, dried fruit, yeast and dandelion syrup. Pours clear brown color with thin quickly diminishing tan-like head and sparkling appearance. Taste starts with sweet caramel and toasted malt, follows by dried fruit, citrus and yeast, mouthfeel is warm and spicy, while finish is mild bitter. Full body, sticky texture and lively carbonation in palate. First glass is enough…

That’s really tasty. Tastes more like a Belgian strong dark ale, though. More fig depth would be nice but this is buoyant and boy ain’t I happy nuff. Plus, hilarious Norwegian kids’ book to win-win the night.

Bottle pours into glass with an unexpected over the top foaming activity. Settles to a beauty of sizzling action within iced tea eye. First taste is foam, to stop a spill. Volatile, alky laced blast in the facial senses. Rich thick medicinal feel to this alky bomb. Warming sensations? Fer sher, back of mouth and down the throat. Seems like it could be used as a disinfecting surface cleaner. Rude, hope this ages well. Expecting sherry, yah know? Well, this aint there yet. Straight up kick you in the face, be prepared to sip for a while. Suddenly, half way thru the bottle, I begin to get dizzy, I think.

Bottle from Ericandersnavy, thanks! Dark amber color. Initial cellar aroma with dried fruit. Full bodied. Alcoholic flavor with dried fruit, figs, white pepper and cellar notes. Floral hops. Pipe tobacco. Excessive alcohol ruins the balance.

Prune and cherry. Deep dark maroon with a small white head. Prune, earthy and cherry with a touch of booze and some pits in the finish.

Bottle pour into tulip glass from Total Wine & More, Danvers. Appearance is gorgeous red-amber with tons of sparkle and lots of fine, white (and a few larger, dark) floaties--looks a bit like a snow globe--with finger-width beige head with good retention and trace lacing. Aroma is sweet caramel, candied sugar, fruit, alcohol. Taste is as aroma. Palate is light-to-medium bodied with frothy texture, fizzy carbonation (akin to champagne), pleasant alcohol warmth and dry, crisp finish. Overall, good representative of the style.

Bottle (0.0075hl): A bit unclear, deep golden to light chestnut-amber coloured, small and stable off-white foamy layer, sweet - mainly - caramelly nose with certain traces of dried fruits and a very well hidden citrussy-hoppy touch; moderate to solid sweet and mildly bitter flavour, full - as expected- bodied, not overly soft; raisins and caramel in the slightly lingering sweet finish, some bitterness and a mild alcohol-burn in the aftertaste.Pretty well drinkable, but not a too complex Triple...
