Quadrupel Ale
”Do you know what dwells in a glass?” asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen's The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass...

Bottle from Pear Delicatessen & Shoppe, Seattle, bb 04/12/15
The bottle is a slow gusher, it pours a cloudy red-amber color with frothy head, and some floaties. The aroma presents some malt, sugar, vegetables (cabbage) and light fruity esters; not convincing. Good body strength, moderately sweet, with smooth mouthfeel; candyish malt flavor, with light fruity esters, more evident vegetables, ordinary bitterness, and some yeast astringency in the final; it also has a light alcohol feeling.
Messy beer.

2011 bottle, best by 02-2013. Aroma has a nice moderate maltiness with dark caramel, toffee, toasted bread and honey. Light spicy phenolic note. Moderately strong fruit esters of raisin, prune, fig and cherry. Light alcohol note. Pours a cloudy copper brown with some burnt amber notes. Medium sized tan head that slowly recess to the edges where it lingers along with a clump in the middle. Flavor has a moderate malt character of toasted bread, dark caramel, light roast and a hint of honey. Moderately strong bitterness that is a bit harsh. Moderate phenolic spice of clove and pepper. Moderately strong dark fruit notes of raisin, prune and cherry. A light noble hop flavor. Some light alcohol spice in the finish along with some lingering toasted bread and raisin. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Medium low astringency with medium low alcohol warmth. Overall a decent quad, but the hop character is harsh as is the astringency. Could possibly use a bit more sweetness. Nice ester and phenolic character.

Reviewed from notes. This one pours a somewhat dark hazy brown color and leaves the same color body with a one finger white foamy head that drifts up and falls at a nice pace, foamy clingy lacing sticks to the sides of the glass. The smell has mainly sweet through some spiced apples, light caramel thrusts itself in the mix, some light Belgian yeastiness does enter in on the back end. The taste is mainly sweet with a decent added spiciness that didn’t show up at all in the smell, sweet somewhat apple-like aftertaste, no finish. On the palate, she sits about a medium on the mouth, carbonation comes across fairly strong - sharper than most Quads I’ve had (I wonder if I should have let this age just a bit longer). Overall, for the most part, I do like this one, but am hoping my bottle’s just a bit young and hopefully the next time I have this I’ll either look for an older bottle or just age whatever bottle I get longer.

Riktigt trevlig.
