Draught, 2021 Ed. Small whitish head, fast gone over (cold)hazed darker metallic golden beer. Pure lambic nose with a deep complex jumble of farmyard & horseblanket aromas; despite this, and without any typical (fruity) grape wafts, it manages to display a vinous character. The mouth is dry, straw dry, fruit - here white grapes do come to mind. More farmyard with a sharp, yet fine fruity acidity. Not lemon, more unripe stonefruit - or ditto grapes. Character of an over-acid rich blanc de blancs . Sharp, almost astringent, tart, not very carbonated. Succes, and reasonably original, which is not always the case with a lot of the present day lambic variations.

Draft @ Zwanze 2022, Moeder Lambic Fontainas.

Another newish (2021) Cantillon grape lambic, with Grenache Blanc this time, a grape originating in Spain and often associated with herbal aromas and a low amount of acids. Bottle shared at Cantillon’s tasting room. Egg-white, medium thick, open and dissolving head, warm pale orangey-tinged straw blonde robe, initially clear, hazy with sediment. Aroma of grape skin and grape seed oil, damp wood, dry sherry, green apple, sulfur to even ‘putjeslucht’ though not persisting, unripe mandarin, dust, dried pear flesh. Tart onset, somewhat citric (lime juice) probably from the grapes, adding a vinous effect, dry with a sweetish-juicy core somewhere; soft carb, smooth oily mouthfeel. Bready core under strong lactic acidity, a tad astringent even, an effect reinforced by grape skin and grape seed tannins and by woodiness. That sulfuric note returns retronasally but only faintly so; ends long, dry and woody, but retains this grapey juicy aspect till the end. More lambic-forward and less ‘wine-like’ than the Scarabée we had right before this one, with less grape vinosity and juiciness and more funkiness and tartness. Complex, supple and refreshing though, reminiscent of some of the earlier grape lambics by Cantillon, like Vigneronne, the original.

Bottle. Cantillon. Mostly clear pale to medium gold. Fine ring of white. Nose has sweet ripe white grape. Light musky funk. Old squeezed lemon. Taste is mostly sweet and grapy, with tartness and some dryness coming later. Easygoing acidity. Fine carbonation. Semi sweet but funky finish. Great stuff.

Bottle at Cantillon. Pours a hazy golden with small white head that lasts. The aroma is white grape, light funk, oak. Light body, sweet grape, tart, balanced, enjoyed this.
