Lecker.

Can from The Gull, North Vancouver, 12/23/20, 2.5 months old; no ABV on the can
Murky blond colour. Wonderful hop aroma, Nelson, cat piss, tropical, mandarin, citrus zest. The mouthfeel is dry, on the weak side, hence a bit too much chalk, and bitterness/harshness, but still showing some hop quality. The hop is very good, but it would be better supported, and would shine, with some sweetness.

New Zealand pale ale in NEIPA outfit, hopped with Nelson Sauvin, from Iowa's most famed craft brewery; can bought at Bier Bazaar. Thick and frothy, cobweb-lacing, egg-white, fine-bubbled, pillowy and stable head on a hazed yolk-yellow blonde beer with pale orangey glow, turning ever more milky with sediment - including small flakes of white yeast. Aroma of freshly squeezed grapefruit juice, unripe pineapple, lemon zest, pink peppercorns, dry marijuana dankness, Thai basil, some toasted red onion, green mango, freshly whipped cream, dried ginger, fresh white bread dough, pine resin, hint of fresh celery. Fruity onset the hoppy way but not as sweet as your typical present-day NEIPA, grapefruit, green mango, unripe apricot, early signs of hop bitterness in a juicy environment, minerally effects, lively but refined carb, full and creamy body; minerality lingers alongside a doughy, soft, white-bready maltiness while remaining subdued in sweetness - instead, a peppery, grapefruity, eventually even piney hop bitterness sets in, stretching over the second half of the palate, leaving behind a very zesty, spicy, grassy character rather than unctuous, decadent tropical fruit - even if a slight touch of mango or pineapple does show up, and unmistakable marijuana- and even diesel-like dankness lingers about in the end. Long-stretching, hop bitter finish, mitigated by soft doughy maltiness, this is very clearly the original, bitter side of NEIPA instead of all those tropical fruit juice 'beers' it has descended into in the past years. Looks like a modern American IPA, tastes more like a classic one - unexpectedly, but refreshingly so. I knew Toppling Goliath was not going to disappoint.

Can, Cask & Barrel. Nice big fruity aroma, pineapple and papaya and stuff. Expressive and appetizing. Not vague like so many hazies seem to do these days. Similar palate. Not quite as expressive, but okay malt base and quality pineapple taste.
