We like this beer for lots of reasons. It’s a traditional old world beer style and it’s a lager, so it takes time to make but it also has roasted & toasted malt flavors. And while it’s light to medium in body, it’s black with a quick, crisp finish. Add in six imported malts and two European hop varieties, you’ll taste why this true to style DB favorite is an award winner!

Let’s make this beer official! 10th rate for this Schwartz. 12oz bottle I picked up in Fredericksburg. Pours a watery mostly opaque black with some creamy, beige head. Nose is nice, stale bread, some light smoke, a little Worcestershire sauce, malt, very light soy. Flavor is nice, more depth than the standard Schwartz, grilled meat, some mushroom, malt, brown toasted bread, some coffee, metallic tonic water, some soy. Medium bodied, dry, mostly clean finish. Really solid.

On tap at the brewpub on 08/23/2009. Clear dark brown body with a small frothy off-white head. Sweet chocolate and caramel aroma. Sweet chocolate and roasted malt flavor. Medium light body with moderate carbonation.

Very fresh growler from the brewpub. Pours a hazy brown color with a red-orange tinge. Medium head with good head retention and lacing. Aroma is slightly roasted malts with berry like fruit notes, light tobacco, caramel and toast and very faint nuttiness. Taste is roasted malts, nuts, caramel and something lightly milky. Mildly hoppy finish. Medium bodied.
