The Lancet even once described Vaux's Stout as "an extremely pure and wholesome drink". We're not sure we'd get away with such a bold claim these days but it demonstrates the historic nature of the beer.

Bottle ordered from Twisted Crow, Basingstoke (RIP). Aroma of malty dark chocolate. Dark brown. Thin frothy beige head. Medium bitter. Dark chocolate and Malta, as per aroma. On the thin side. Slick. Fizzy carbonation. Long astringent finish. Straightforward but enjoyable.

Bottle from Appellation Wines. Pours black with a decent tan head. Aromas of earthy malt, dark fruit and leather. Maybe some liquorice. Meaty too. Taste is spicy, some stewed prune, black malt, bitter tannins, earthy again. Long fruity, ashy charcoal finish. Liked this.

75cl bottle from Appellation Wines. Appearance - black and tan to fawn head. Nose - sweet chocolate and creamy caramel. Honeycomb. Roasty. Taste - creamy chocolate, roasty smoke and liquorice. Palate - medium bodied and sweet at the beginning. Then roasty finish. Overall - lovely traditional stout.
