Kong Havtorn is a flavoursome New England IPA with a wonderful aroma of flowers, fruit and citrus. This comes partly from the three different kinds of hop and the sea buckthorn juice we use in the beer. The beer is a beautiful golden, almost yellowish colour with a misty quality due to the wheat malt, oatmeal and dried hops we add to the brew. The taste features many of the same notes as the aroma - an alluring harmony of sea buckthorn, citrus and exotic fruits, which is gentler on the taste buds than the more bitter IPAs.

Kong Havtorn was developed in collaboration with the Maltkings brewing team in Køge.

Note that, because of the essential oils in the sea buckthorn, the beer has a limited head.

bottle. wow - crazy orange colored beer, what did they do to get it to that color.. no head. ah. havthorn juice that's probably why the color is unusual. Aroma is juice, malts, faint hop bitterness, quite juicy. the juicy part is like citrus fruits. flavor is some juice, some malty sweetness, some, or rather a lot of sweet herbal bitterness that does not serve it well, and some notes of alca-zelser or treo or the like to top it up. They seriously need to tweak the recipe or this will be a rare beer soon. Not a very pleasant drink in my opinion. not up to the usual ørbæk standards reg. tastiness, but it is always very okay to experiment, keep doing that, it gives us a lot of perspective for the other beers you make.

Bottle from SuperBrugsen, Vindinggård. Pours opaque orangeish amber with small white head. Aroma is grapefruit, pineapple, malt and hints of iron. Taste is medium sweet, medium bitter and light acidic. Body is watery with sparkling carbonation. Finish is long and medium sweet, medium bitter and medium acidic with notes of tropical fruit, black tea and spruce. The acidity may come from the sea buckthorn, but it's not present in the aroma or taste. IMO it is too acidic for the NEIPA style, but thumbs up to Ørbæk for trying a different interpretation of the style.

Bottle 50 cl. Pours an opaque, deep golden with no head whatsoever. Nose has that intense and somewhat odd aroma of sea buckthorn, herbal, tea-like - nothing NEIPA whatsoever. Medium body, malty, fruity, slight tartness and agai sea buckthorn with a salty touch. A very strange creation indeed, not sure why they would call it a NEIPA though - other than commercial reasons off course. 240321
