Egill is the first of a series of Gruit ales from Hopping Brewsters. Brewed with recipes based on medieval malt bills dating to 12th century and herbs known to have been used in gruits.

Egill has dandelion, fire nettle and elder berries giving it the sweet and sour taste.

Brewed as collaboration with the Panimoyhtiö Hiisi. Thanks guys for the good fun!

Draught@SOPP Helsinki 2015. Brownish amber hazy colour with a mediumsized off-white head. Aroma is salty, some wooden and quie toasted malty notes along with some mild sourness. Flavour is sweet smoked malts, some tartness, fruits, mild salty notes as well as some herbal and floral notes to it. Kind of muddy in a way, but still really pleasant.

(Keg at Oljenkorsi, 20150320) The beer poured dark brown and cloudy. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had malts, spiciness, molasses, tartness and berries. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were berries, tartness, sweetness, spiciness and malts. Aftertaste had berries and tartness. A very different beer but I liked this one. Weird enough.

Tap at Roosters, Oulu. Colour is deep reddish copper with small white head. Aromas and flavours: Fruits, berries, raspberries, strawberries, some sourness and tartness, lactose and milk, some sweetness and hints of spices. Very interesting. This is actually quite good. Reminds me of those juicy sour ales in America. Ok lactose dominates maybe too much.

Draught @ One Pint Pub. Aroma is somewhat tart and lactic with some oud bruin -vibes. Also hints of red wine and earthy notes. Flavour has lactic acid, tartness, earthy notes, some currant juice and hints of red wine. Quite empty finish. Not my thing, the lactic sourness disturbs me here. Gets a bit better after some sips though.
