The name is derived from ‘Cock-a Hoop’, an old custom of removing the cock (or spigot) from a barrel and resting it on the hoop of the cask before commencing a drinking bout, but was changed to reflect the brewery’s location on the banks of the River Cocker.

500ml bottle. Clear orangey golden colour with average, frothy, moderately lacing, white head. Grainy, slightly strawy malt aroma with a fruity apple touch. Taste has initially a fruity apple note, later a grainy, husky, slightly dry overtone, a bit watery throughout.

(bottle) Clear, golden colour with a medium-sized and slightly off-white foamy head. Citric and flowery hoppy aroma with a tinge of anise spice and cara-malt. Mildly bitter flavour, light bodied with a crisp carbonation. Soft malty, minimally bready taste with mildly fruity, floral and drying hops; bitter hoppy, slightly fruity and mildly cara-malty finish. 15.V.12

Brown 500ml bottle (4.2%ABV), best before 31 Mar 2012, drank and reviewed 18 June 2011. Poured into a straight UK pint sleeve. Golden yellow body, good lasting white head on top, which left some good lacing. The beer gave off a mild hoppy smell with slight floral, citrusy notes. The taste is a refreshing hoppy and those citrus smells also appear in the tatse, again with floral overtones. Easy to drink, uncomplicated and OK, no world beater, but certainly not a bad beer.

Light amber, clear, frothy 2 finger head, some lacing.
Aroma - light spicy and citrus hops, hint of light sweet malts.
Taste - Light spicy hop, bit of citrus, light malt, bit metallic, dull and boring. Not great flavour.
Palate - Soft carb, thin body, light bitter. Finish light bitter. minerals, bit metallic.
Overall - Below average bitter. Deficient in flavour for the abv. As recall, I think the cask version is much better.

[Original rating 30/8/2011, 500ml bottle at 4.2% that Dad shared with me - cheers!] Pale amber, slight white head, no fizz. Malt and lots of lemon but unfortunately lots of metal too - feels like a decent ale that’s been ruined by bottling. Would like to try this one on cask. [Re-rate 21/01/2012, another bottle from Dad] Deep gold with a moderate off-white head and rather too much fizz. Reasonable citrus flavour, some caramel and biscuitty malt, moderate bitterness in the finish. OK. Exactly the same rating as the first time, so pleased with my consistent marking if not with the beer!
