Chocolate and black malts lend a strong roastiness to balance the intense hopping of this haughty Black IPA.

On tsp at the Haymarket Greenbush event. Pours near black with a brown head that dissipates slowly to the edges and laces. Aroma has a decent amount of dank pine hops with some underlying roasted malts. Flavor has pine up front with some growing roasted malts and dark grains.

Draft at Crunchy’s, East Lansing. Opaque deep brown body, thin ring of cream-colored carbonation. Nose of dry roasted malts and charred hops. Dry, creamy body, thin and acidic with huge notes of roasted coffee and hints of brown sugar and red wine. Finishes with a medley of tannic leafy hops. Quite complex.

Tap. Woody smoky malt aroma. Dark brown color with small head. Slightly sweet dark chocolate malt and moderately bitter herbal hops flavor. Nice balance.

Tap at brewery. Faint smoke, hops, molasses aroma. Cola brown, ruby tine, small creamy tan head. Dark roasted malt and hops. Dry chalky finish. There seems to be something a little overly sweet in the malt. In fact, most of the GB beers I tried had the same distinctive overly sweet malt flavor.
