HIISI, the Finnish, mythologically creative craft brewery and Hexvessel – a British/Finnish folk-/psychedelic rock band have made a collaboration way beyond traditional boundaries. Kouko, a new honey and spruce tip infused barley wine, was designed from the ground up while listening to the new Hexvessel album ”All Tree”.

At a strength of 10,5% and an album length of 46 minutes, this project clearly brings a bit of extra to the world of beer & music collaborations.

”With Kouko we wanted to make a big, mythologically fitting beer that keeps on slowly evolving as you sip it. ”All Tree” was the main influence while designing the beer, and the beer ended up sharing a rather similar rhythm with it’s inspiration.” – Mikko Mäkelä, HIISI.

Bottled@Littlepub, Vaasa. Ruby colour, mediumsized foamy head. Aroma is fruits, berries, some mild toffee and a bit alcohol to it. Flavour is slighlty alcoholic, some fruits, mild berries and some fruity hops to it. Alcohol gets more evident when the beer gets warmer.

Bottle brought over by my cousin. Nutty aroma with some herbs and a boozy edge. Medium brown. Thin translucent beige head soon retreats to the rim. Bitter. Some umami. Botanical may be a good description: pine and herbs. But low key. Thick bodied. Oily. Average carbonationo. Finnish finish: some astringency, some warmth. It's enjoyable however it's also understated.

(Bottle, 0.33 l - batch 737 - BB 31.01.2020, from Alko, 20190913) The beer poured brown and hazy. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had malts, prunes, grass and sweetness. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were pine, caramel, malts, toffee and bitterness. Aftertaste was malty and bitter. A brew that felt a little bit raw but very promising.
