The official 'house beer' of Château Lambert, an early 19th-century castle in Jumet near Charleroi, run as a hotel by a somewhat eccentric, but very entertaining and utterly friendly proprietor, who happens to be an "amateur de bière" as well. The label depicts the castle and even its fierce guardian, a goose called Charlotte who will not hesitate to physically, vigorously and painfully attack if you are new to the premises - or have been staying overnight and she forgot your face in the meantime. Had this beer multiple times during our one-night stay at the chateau, cheers Philippe! Cobweb-lacing, off-white, medium thick, slowly opening but generally stable head, orange-glowing warm peach blonde, misty robe with strong sparkling. Aroma of dried wormwood, old grapefruit peel, bitterroot, white pepper, bread crust, dried apricot, damp straw, tonic water, parsnip, potato peel, bitter unripe peach. Fruity onset in a somewhat restrained, dryish way, hinting at dried apricot and dried orange peel including early signs of bitterness, lively carbonated with a dash of apple peel thrown in; bread-crusty, old-biscuity and dry-cereally maltiness evolving to a long, firmly hop bitter finish, very rooty, peppery and quinine-like, breathing dried wormwood and old dried grapefruit peel retronasally. Ends notably dry and quenching. The "lord of the château" told me about his love for bitter and dry beers and this one very clearly conveys his personal taste - and given his interest in the subject, this is certainly not an 'etiketbier' as one sees all too often in this kind of context. Château Lambert has this typical Walloon dryness and bitterness to it - often in stark contrast to the fruity sweetness in Flemish blondes - making for an almost saison-like experience. I enjoyed this one a lot, even outside of its fascinating setting. Cheers Philippe, I will certainly return to this lovely, charming, eccentric and history-exuding place you have in the old 'Pays Noir'!
