Panda at home, big thanks to Dave, 08/02/23. Deep claret red with a crimson cap that dissipates to a swirl. Nose is red grape must, vinous, funk, damp straw, berry pips. Taste comprises tarte red grapes, blackcurrant, funk, hay bale, vinous, damp oak. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a balanced acidic ripple. Solid well balanced lambic.

Bottle at the brewery. Pours red purple with a thin white head. Aroma is red grape, jammy red fruit, funk, oak, red wine tannins. Taste is red grape, tannin, jammy red fruit, redcurrant sharpness, oak. Real dry finish with fruit sharpness mellowed out by the oak. Great stuff

Bottle at Moeder Fontainas. Garnet pour with a white head. Very little on the nose. Mellow luscious red vinous note. Sweet cherry flavors coming through now. The subtle carbonation is perfect. Another gem from Jean. Great body and mouthfeel.

Medium, quite stable, pink head over bright deep-red beer. Red fruit, grapes, wineleaf, Belgian bun. Surprisingly sweet - fruit- ànd alcohol (6.5%?) Vinous as few, but with little acidity (or masked?). Again red fruit, grapes. Instead of the classic lambic acids, here tannines reign supreme, takin care of serious dry-out effect, very outspoken; still some acidthinning, some carbonation throughout. Very weird product - utterly unlike any other Cantillon I tried before.

New grape lambic by Cantillon (the grape lambic specialist ‘par excellence’, I would add), this time with the Italian Sangiovese variety. Bottle at Cantillon’s taproom. Pale lilac, moussy, creamy, medium thick, reasonably stable head, lightly misty deep ruby red robe with warm and pure purple glow, hazy in the end with more brownish-mauve tinge. Aroma of red grape juice, Chianti wine, apple peel, yoghurt, butter (diacetyl), green pear, cava, redcurrant, sawdust, minerals, cassis. Sleek red-fruity onset, grape juice from a bottle without added sugars, surrounded by plum, pear and sour apple notes, tart with a light lemony edge but nowhere harsh and remaining ‘mals’ throughout; champenoise sparkling, ‘malse’ lambic core smoothly continuing, somewhat oily even, perhaps from that buttery effect. Sedate lactic tartness, lively grape juiciness in a red berry-like way (more than a wine-like way as is often the case in grape lambics), developing woody and grape skin tannins in the end – but even then, remaining juicy, soft, oily and highly elegant. Some faint Bretty funk sets in towards the end, too, and there is a lot of underlying minerality which lingers and lingers – almost like sparkling water; these effects add some depth and personality to a slender, sleek, sophisticated and somewhat distinct ‘red grape juice lambic’.

Bottle at Cantillon. Pours a dark ruby with small pinkish head that lasts. The aroma is grape skin, funk, earth, oak. Slick body, sweet grape, funk, oak, nice tartness, enjoyed this.

Full body, soft carbonation. tastes vinous, marzipan, berry notes, very jammy, bit grassy. Finishes dry and lightly to medium sour with vinous notes, berries and jammy notes. Bottle. Deep ruby to purple. Fresh grapes, blueberries, funk. Quite vinous but also very fruity. Similar to it’s sister beer the Piacere, bit at the same time very different. Lovely stuff.
