0.375 l bottle from 'Het Huis van de Geuze', bottled in April 2021. A little hazy, orangeish amber with quite some floaties and a medium large, slightly fluffy, slowly diminishing, white head. Sourish, gently fruity, slightly funky aroma of lemon, apricot, oak, some apple and hints of horse blanket. Minimally sweet, gently sour, quite fruity and a bit funky taste of lemon, light vinegar, oak, gooseberry and hints of glue, followed by a medium long, quite tart, acidic, woody-dry finish. Medium body, slightly astringent and gently effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Totally different from the other three variants of this year's release. Much more acidic, even a little sharp, very untypical for Boon. Still quite pleasant as it's not mouth-puckering, but not my favourite one.

The fourth new Monoblend in the pack released by Boon last week during Toer de Geuze, this time highlighting a 'foeder' which was used for calvados before it was acquired by Boon; it has been in use for ten years now as a lambic barrel so according to the brewery, any calvados effects left should be all but unnoticeable. Medium sized, egg-white, lightly shred-lacing and slowly opening but generally well-retaining head, misty deep old-golden robe with pale orangey tinge and small strings of sparkling from bottom to top - clearly less so than in the VAT 16 I had before this one, which would also explain the smaller head. Aroma of unripe nectarine, green apple, old wood, freshly cut grass, an odd hint of yellow curry powder somewhere, barnyard, minerals, cava, Conference pear peel, raw parsnip, dry hay. Very crisp onset, softly but persistently lemony - an effect reinforced by a very high, 'champenoise' effervescence, mingled with notes of sour grape, Granny Smith apple and gooseberry; rounded body, bread-crusty core under yoghurty lactic tartness and unripe stonefruit astringency, while the more crisp green fruitiness plays around. Remains crisp, refinedly acidic and supple, even when drying woody tannins and this deep and earthy old hop bitterness set in in the end. Finishes quite juicy and green-fruity, with just a subtle glow of warming, perhaps indeed vaguely calvados-like alcohol, accentuating the green apple effect. Supple, crisp, sour and green-fruity, very elegant, a masterful geuze like the others in this series.

Zythos 2022. Golden. This one is quite thinnish and tart. Lemony sharpness. Chalky, minerally. Subtle vanilla in finish.
