Brewed using a historical recipe from Bamberg's first documented brewery, "Brauerei Michaelsberg", for the "Bamberger Stiftsgarten" (a part of the same monastery that the Michaelsberg brewery originally belonged to). The brewery was active from around 1122 to 1969. This beer was brewed using hops from Spalt and the "Hopfengarten Bamberg", which has reintroduced hop cultivation in Bamberg. Schlenkerla used their official name "Hellerbräu" for this historical beer, since Konrad Graser who was a brewer at the Michaelsberg Brewery, later took over Hellerbräu (Schlenkerla) in 1866!

Stiftsgartenbier, Flasche aus dem Straßenverkauf vom Schlenkerla. - Kupfergoldbraun, leicht trüb, schöner Schaum. - In der Nase Schlenkerla-typische feine Rauchigkeit, reiches, warm karamelliges Malz von runder Süße, milde aber sehr aromatische fränkische Hopfung. - Antrunk reich und tief toastig-karamellmalzig mit leichter Rauchigkeit, feiner kandierter Orangenschale, zarter Bonbonsüße. Milder rezent, vollmundig. Im Abgang solide Hopfenherbe, leicht erdig, und nachhallender Rauch. - Sehr gediegenes Rauchmärzen, tief und komplex aber rund, ein Hochgenuß. (3.12.2022.)

Bottle courtesy of Jonas, cheers Jonas. Had this at home Saturday 3rd December 2022 listening to Wet Leg - Wet Leg, cooking Lamb with Preserved Lemon and Plums. Pours hazy amber with a large frothy white head. Fruity and a little tangy, earthy, leafy, a touch of a woodland natural feel, simple but really nicely done, not unlike some more adventurous UK bitters, smoke and a mild bitterness. Very nice.

Flaska från Bierothek. Gyllengul klar vätska med medelhögt vitt krämigt skum. Stor kropp, medelrökig, bokbeståndet, chark, läder, torv, besk apelsinmarmelad, bra bett i beskan. Maffig med bra balans. Mycket gott

500 ml bottle. Cloudy orange with a big fluffy head. Smoked ham, zesty citrus, sourdough, hay, grain, again smoke, bread. Dry zesty hoppy bitterness, umami, some sweetness. Full bodied, oily creamy texture, lively carbonated, dry bitter zesty hoppy smoky finish. Very good, as expected by Schlenkerla.

BB 12/2022. amber hazy color, medium big off white head. smells toffee, caramel, nutty, light spices, bit grainy. nice smell full body, soft carbonation. tastes earthy, peppery, light caramel, bit nutty, toffee, grassy. finishes lightly bitter with notes of nuts, caramel and peppery notes. overall nice one, expected something a bit smoky, rather mellow.

Bottle. Slightly hazy amber color, with a nice foamy head. Aroma is mild smoke, malty, bready, mild fresh hoppy notes too. Taste is bready, smoke but too intense. Medium carbonation, oily texture. Very refreshing. Great beer.

Grainy beginning. Easy to drink, bitter grainy with lots of bitter hops. Bitter dry malty in the aftertaste, deep bitter with an earthy bitter and burned caramelly finish. Interesting but not easy to drink with lots of bitterness remaining on the tongue with hints of smoke.
