Brewed using a historical recipe from Bamberg's first documented brewery, "Brauerei Michaelsberg", for the "Bamberger Stiftsgarten" (a part of the same monastery that the Michaelsberg brewery originally belonged to). The brewery was active from around 1122 to 1969. This beer was brewed using hops from Spalt and the "Hopfengarten Bamberg", which has reintroduced hop cultivation in Bamberg. Schlenkerla used their official name "Hellerbräu" for this historical beer, since Konrad Graser who was a brewer at the Michaelsberg Brewery, later took over Hellerbräu (Schlenkerla) in 1866!

Bottle. Clear golden orange. Fruity vanilla. Nice, sparkly, easy drinkable. Very Frankonian. Like it.

Bottle bought at the brewpub. Pours clear amber with rocky but stable off-white head. Clear aroma of smoke and yeast, with malty notes and hoppy touches. Bitter, hoppy flavour with notes of smoke and malt, and touches of yeast and caramel. Bitter and smoky aftertaste with eatery touches. Well, like nearly all Schlenkerla beers, this one, too, is nothing short of great.

Bottle, 5.7%. Mild, but good, smokey aroma. Cloudy amber colour. Sparkling. Big stable creamy off-white head. Mild smokey note. Roasted and nutty with a mild spicy hop note. Fairly high bitterness.

0,5 l bottle from kappldav123. Thanks a lot! Cloudy red golden, steady two finger white foamy head. Smokey on the nose, sweet malty. Taste is also smokey, malt in the second row, hints of citrus. Low carbonated. Long lasting hop bitterness with citrus in the aftertaste. Nice one.

Tap at Beergeek Bar. Quite clear coppery-amber body, thick off-white head. Medium to light pleasant smokey touch mixing perfectly with some herbal, citric notes. Fun how no smoked malt was allegedly used. Those lovely soft herbal-citric notes persist, hitting a slightly bacony malty presence. Somehow not fully crisp, somehow still tasty. Nice little bitterish touch. A well made, tasty beer. It IS Schlenkerla after all.
