In the late 1800’s these strong, well hopped stouts were brewed for export by Scottish breweries such as William Younger & Co.
Using a base of pale, brown and black malts we produced our own version.

Can from Westhill Service Station. It pours black with light brown bread. The aroma is rich roasted malt, toothy, chewy, umami, liquorice, splash of hendo's, dark chocolate, chocolate bourbons, charred notes and toasted spice. The taste is dry, bitter, rich roasted malt, toothy, chewy, toothy, charred wood, ashy, umami, molasses, peppery spice, dark chocolate, earthy, brown bread and cookie dough with a toasted cacao nib finish. Medium body and moderate, fizzy carbonation. An interesting old school vibe to it. Maybe needs a touch more sweetness or less umami to make it moreish, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Can from Great Grog. Black body with a thick tan head. No visible carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of hazelnut, Marmite and coffee. Flavour of roasted malt and Worcestershire sauce. Medium body with a smooth mouthfeel. Soft fizz. It’s well balanced and tasty but, for me, doesn’t have the depth or complexity to be great.

Black beer, thick tan head. Toasted malt aroma with a little hop. Flavour has toasted malt again, some bitter hops, a touch of coffee and aniseed. Rich, smooth, tasty
