Cask at Hops, Crewe. Pours a dark reddish-brown with a small frothy cream head and good lacing. Malts to the fore in the aroma alongside coffee and chocolate. In the mouth it fluctuates between bitter and sweet with malts, floral hops and dried fruits. Later there are traces of coffee, ginger and raspberries leading to a slightly dry finish. This is decent.

Bottle at home, a couple of days past expiry date. Aroma is piny hops, strong pine resin, herbal and spicy notes, mint, touch of liquorice, roasted malt. Flavour is light sweet and medium bitter. Body is medium. Not your typical Black IPA, bit awkward actually, with the mint and herbal notes, strong carbonation, not bad but a bit messy.

On cask at Port Street Beer House, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings medium roast and some piney hops. Flavour is nicely balanced between the roasted malt and piney hops. The cask is a strange format for the beer, which dials down the robustness. It's well-made but I'd rather it in a keg.

Bottle from Ship In A Bottle. Appearance - opaque black with a nice fluffy fawn head. Nose - wood and plant stalk, something a bit menthol and resin generally. Not getting much chocolate or citrus. Taste - minty as f**k. At the very back there’s something lightly creamy that might resemble milk chocolate or instant coffee. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy yet drying texture and a long dry finish. Overall - where is the chocolate? Where is the citrus?

330ml bottle shared with Ashton McCobb. Pours black with a thick ecru head. Aromas of wood, plant stalks, resin. Taste is woody, bitter, minty. Odd. Exhale is menthol! Faint creamy latte. Not getting on with this.
