A traditional Bavarian-style Hefe Wiesse from space, with notes of banana, clove, and bubblegum.

Once upon a time, there was a beer . . .

It was a traditional Bavarian-style weisse beer that brought joy to villagers all across the land. They relished in its wonderful notes of banana and clove, along with its bubblegum-like aromas. Everyone was merry and contented. However, as legend has it, one day the King proclaimed to the villagers that they could no longer enjoy this delicious libation, as its name was not permitted to be spoken in the kingdom.

So, I mean, what're ya gonna do? We changed the name. Problem solved.
Thus, Legendary Shader was born. And there was much rejoicing.

22 ounce bottle into weizen glass; no bottle dating, but was released fairly recently. Pours very hazy golden orange color with a 1 finger fairly dense white head with decent retention, that reduces to a spotty lace cap that lingers. Minimal lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big orange peel, pear, apple, banana, apricot, wheat, bread, bubblegum, clove, pepper, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, malt, hop notes; with good strength. Taste of orange peel, apricot, banana, pear, apple, wheat, bread, clove, bubblegum, light pepper, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of orange peel, apricot, banana, pear, apple, wheat, bread, clove, bubblegum, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance, complexity, and robustness of fruity/spicy yeast, malt, and moderate hop flavors; with zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a lightly creamy and very smooth mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice hefeweizen. All around good balance, robustness, and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, malt, and moderate hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle @ home, really big thanks to TheAlum for tracking down this Hefe-Whale for me! Pours a fairly hazy, a touch reddish, dark orange appearance with a lasting cream colored head. Aroma has some banana and citrus but really is overloaded with clove and nutmeg. The flavor is a bit more to my liking with more banana than the nose along with a light tartness, citrus, wheat bread, and spicy chewy yeast. A bit tangy, fruity aftertaste. There is a bit of chlorine / dishwater notes when it warms up but it’s not horrible. Flavor tastes fairly close to its Bavarian brethren. Pretty chill Hefeweizen. I’m not sure I would put this in the very top tier of American-made Bavarian Weissbier, but it is pretty good.

On tap at the Brewpub, October 21, 2011. Hazy yellow with a small white head. This is a descent German Hefeweizen. Aroma and taste of banana, clove, wheat, citrus and some yeast. Not a bad beer for the style.

Enjoyed on tap at 3 Floyds Brewpub in Munster, IN while having a scotch egg & some french fries with good friends. Appearance is like a mimosa, looks like orange juice in a weiss glass. Aroma of pure bananas, sweetness, like one of those Doles pineapple orange juice containers. Taste of hefe yeast, banana notes, not too many spices, tastes more like beer than juice, but still has a juice like quality to it. I like it, just a bit unusual.

On Draught@Mikkeller Bar, Copenhagen. Hazy yellow colour with a fairly small white head. Some yeast and citrus in the nose. Lively carbonation. Quite a big hit of sourness in the flavour. A strange and frankly not the greatest interpretation of the style, which seemed to miss out on many of the key traits inherent to Hefeweizens.
