Potus non frangit ieiunium. – “Drinking is not breaking the fast”. Stout or strong beer owes its origin to this old catholic rule for Lent. In former times monks and lords of the castle brewed a powerful bock beer to strengthen themselves for the 40 days of fasting leading up to Easter solemnities. In Bavaria, an extra-strength bock beer is immediately recognizable by the suffix ending in “ator”.

50cl bottle pours a clear, root beer brown with some clumpy white head. Nose is malty, pumpernickel bread, sugary, cola. Flavor is more pumpernickel bread, brown sugar, root vegetables, cola. Medium bodied, sweet finish.

The bottle looks really good. Beer in the glass quite dark, nice head. Starts strong, a bit alcoholic, not too much. Quite roasty-malty with a smokey touch, also some coffee notes. Finish well balanced, less malty. All in all a bit too roasty for my taste, but still a good doppelbock!

500 mL bottle from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA, opened 7/9/11. Pours a clear reddish brown color with a medium sized frothy tan head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of banana, nutty notes, toffeeish malts. The taste is toffee, nutty notes, caramel, banana and faint hops in the finish. Comes across a bit like banana nut bread. Medium bodied. Decent.

Tap at 4:20, Rome. Pours rich ruby with a huge, tan head. Big, ripe berry nose, hints of sugar. Very sweet flavor, but not overly berry-like. Some roast, burnt toffee and brown sugar. Medium in body with average carbonation. Warm finish, notes of dark malts, sugar, toffee and faint fruit. Good stuff.

Bottled. A dark brown beer with a huge dark brown head. The aroma has notes of malt, caramel, and nuts. The flavor is very sweet with notes of caramel, nuts, bread, and malt, leading to a dry alcoholic finish.

Bottle 50 cl. Courtesy of Ungstrup. Pours a clear dark orangey brown with a creamy and lacing beige head. Nutty aroma, burned caramel and pumpernickel. Solid body, sweet roast and pumpernickel. Warming alcohol finish but a subdued bitterness. A rich and very fullfilling beer. 180611

50 cL bottle, courtesy of Ungstrup. Pours clear and golden amber with a small tan head. Aroma is roasted dark malty and slight caramelish. Sweet malty, caramelish and slight breadish. Dense malty and slight alcohol presence. Good level of bitterness too.

Dark honey and raisin nose. Clear mahogany, thick yellow head, good lacing. Medium body. Raisin and licorice flavor, well attenuated. Finishes with subtle vanilla and hazelnut notes. A very well made, non-cloying doppelbock.

Maxl rainer jubilator. Unfiltered version thanks to Alex at 4:20. Lots of sweet malt on the nose dark brown clear colour. Does bite into the sweetness on the finish. Rich brown sugar. So damn drinkable. Gorgeous. Really full and good good plums

Dumpfer Malzantrunk, der in Teilen aufgesetzt wirkt. Dies liegt vor allem an der hintergründigen muffigen Herbe, die im Mittelteil mehr in den Vordergrund rückt. Hier wird die Malzigkeit breiter und etwas süßer, was die nur wenig vorhandene Würzigkeit stärkt. Trotzdem wirkt das Bier wenig wie ein Bock, die Süße wird immernoch zu wenig für die Süße benutzt, dafür ist die Herbe zu stark. Der Hopfen fehlt meist gänzlich. Im Abgang intensiver, nur minimal scharf, etwas trocken, was aber nicht stört. Ein wenig konkreter Doppelbock mit zu wenig Tiefe. 10/11/10/9/12/9
