Potus non frangit ieiunium. – “Drinking is not breaking the fast”. Stout or strong beer owes its origin to this old catholic rule for Lent. In former times monks and lords of the castle brewed a powerful bock beer to strengthen themselves for the 40 days of fasting leading up to Easter solemnities. In Bavaria, an extra-strength bock beer is immediately recognizable by the suffix ending in “ator”.

30/04/2011 Brasserie 4:20 (tap).

Bottle: Clear, deep ruby-amber coloured, big - slowly collapsing - tanned head; moderate caramelly and fruity nose with a mild toasty and coffeeish background; moderate to solid sweet-bitter flavour, medium bodied, smooth; moderately lingering - getting a bit drier - dark-malty and coffeeish finish with a bitterness in the aftertaste. Good, moreish Doppelbock....

(bottle) Clear, dark brown colour with a beige and thick foamy head. Sweet crusty, roast-malty and moderately molassy aroma with caramel and subtle notes of dried fruits, accompanied by a tinge of ethereally spices. Sweet flavour with roasty bitter notes, full bodied with a smooth carbonation. Solid roasty malty base with notes of caramel, bread crusts, vanilla and dried berries; almost dry-ish roasty and slightly hop bitter finish with a melange of caramel, mocha and vanila in the aftertaste. Very good. 07.IV.10
