Almost black with a thick cream coloured head. Aroma of roasted malts, rye, faint fruits, some coffee notes, grass, hops. Flavour is strong hoppy bitterness with a dry bitter finish. Nice, the bitterness is indeed impressive, but this brew could use more depth.

Bought in Albergen. Bottle. Deep dark brown color. Roast, citrus, black berries and grassy notes in the aroma. Citrus in the grassy hopbitter flavor. Tart, black berries. Roast. Well rounded, in spite of the citrus character and the intense hops. Nice.

Bottle @ Servaas Café, Maastricht. Very darkn brown colour, creamy brown foam. Medium carbonation. Aroma of coffee and roasted malts, refreshing hoppy aftertaste with notes of grapefruit. Good combination. Good Black IPA!

Bottle from Barrique Odijk, BB Oct 2015, large sample. Dark brown color, big light brown head. Aroma of lots of grapefruity hops, citrus, biscuit, just a tiny hint of rye and dark bread. Soft to medium bitterness in taste, slight biscuity sweetness. Some dry dark bread note as well. I wonder if this would come out clearly as a black IPA in a blind tasting. It definitely goes more towards IPA at the moment (which is about 1 month old). Great hop aroma, bit dry chalky in the finish. Not completely balanced, also not for a black IPA, but quite nice.

Altijd leuk dat je zwager langskomt met zijn hond, behalve als je allergisch bent voor die beesten, en ja hoor binnen een minuut zegt je neus, zoek het maar uit ik ga in de modus verstopping. dus qua aroma’s krijg ik vrij weinig mee. oogt iig bruin met schuimige kaki kraag. smaken zijn redelijk den/hoppig en wat laurier maar behoorlijk overheersende bitterheid, welke erg lang aanhoudt en eigenlijk het gehele bier bepaald. medium body, dun/glad van textuur, en iets metalig in de mond bij de afdronk ... vond hem wat te --- Beer merged from original tick of Grateful Deaf Black Rye IPA on 17 May 2018 at 11:37 - Score: 6

Bottle @ home. Opaque black color, medium to full sized beige to slightly brown colored head that lasts for quite a while. Aroma is malts, hops, lightly roasty, rye. Taste malts, rye, roast, hops, moderate to heavy bitter. Medium body and carbonation.
