  Barley Wine - Barley Special
Score
7.57
ABV: 10.5% IBU: - Ticks: 25

2009 vintage. 375mL bottle, courtesy of fiulijn (thanks Alex), pours a deep dark mahogany / dark brown with a small beige head. Aroma is very dry, oaky and vinous, with dry wood and grapes. Flavour is similar, with dominating dry vinous and oaky notes - I get mostly wine and wood here. Quite complex. Drinkable in small amounts, as the intense wine and oak become slightly overbearing after a while. This has held up exceptionally well over the past 5 years. Nice stuff.

Bottle: Poured a reddish black with thin tan color head. Aroma was strong sour grapes and very wine like. Taste was sour grapes with offsetting malts and strong alcohol warming.

Perfect balance, good chocolate, very vinous, maturing very well. Excellent.

2012-03-24, bottle from the brewer, thanks Riccardo! Vintage 2009, 3 years old, 8-4-8-4-16=40
Very dark brown color, almost black; small head. Aroma of dark malts, chocolate, with a pleasant wine twist, light wood too. The body is strong enough, with malt flavor, chocolate, quite strong sour presence, light fruits, vinous. Astringent final.
Dynamic and very pleasant, complex.

Opaque brown beer. Crisp palate. Sour start but it’s not puckery! Unsweet wood and some herbs in the malt. Finishes tangy and a crisp. An interesting sourish dark beer.

bottle pours dark brown with a thin tan head that fades quickly leaving little trace. Aroma is dry red wine, strawberries, big horseblanket notes. Flavor is rich toast and caramel malt notes, mild booze and a big red wine finish of oak, leather and grape tannin. Really nice beer.

333 from Pizza Port Bottle Shop. The plastic bottle cap liner is more 3D than any I’ve ever seen. Pours quite black with a fluffy, bubbly 3/16 inch tan head. It smells like sour wine. Not vinegar. Sour wine. Near full in body with very mild carbonation. The flavor is vinous and sour. Red wine yes. Barbera? It seems too smooth for such a crude wine. Maybe oak aged Barbera (vice E&J Gallo) does become smooth. So barley wine? No way. This is a sour ale. Friggin brilliant. Right in there with Flemish sours. Perhaps a discriminator is that there seems to be a hit of sweet at the end of each sip. Or this may be too complex for my palate. Friggin brilliant!!!!!
