Hop Henge Experimental IPA is our annual exercise in IBU escalation. An outrageous amount of Centennial and Cascade hops are added to each barrel, with a heavy dry-hop presence as well. It is dense and muscular, with a blend of crystal, pale and carastan malts creating an overall biscuity characteristic. It’s all hop, no apologies.

Bottle from Brewery Creek, Vancouver
Hazy golden color with compact head. The aroma develops in the glass; it starts with very fresh mandarin and mango, it changes to higher notes of biscuity malts and summer flowers in a hot field. Lean body, with a very mild sweetness; nice malts, less crackery than expected though; it has a good level of bitterness, the hops are juicy, mellow.
Excellent beer, I wish I had it fresher.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best before 7/15/2014. Pours light hazy/cloudy bright orange color with a 2 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big tangerine, orange peel, lemon zest, pineapple, mango, peach, papaya, apricot, light caramel, bread, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with great complexity and balance of juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate malt sweetness; with good strength. Taste of tangerine, orange peel, lemon zest, pineapple, peach, apricot, mango, papaya, light caramel, bread, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/grassy earthiness. Fair amount of floral/pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of tangerine, orange peel, lemon zest, pineapple, peach, apricot, mango, light caramel, bread, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and robustness of juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate malt sweetness; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth and fairly creamy/sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent DIPA. All around great complexity and balance of juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate malt sweetness; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Sample at Kurtkeller 014: Almanac-tastic 01 on 06/27/2014. Sample at the Ale Wine & Spirits beer tasting on 01/24/2014. The beer pours a clear orange-amber color with a wispy white head that diminishes quickly. Spotty lacing on the glass. Earthy malt, fruit and hops in the nose. Medium-bodied and moderately bitter with fresh fruity hops, malt and caramel flavors. The finish is hoppy with lingering citrus and earthy malt aftertaste. Above average overall.

On tap at mad mex. Smells like mild hoppy perfume. Fairly clear pale yellow. Has a slight silky head. Taste is quite ipa bitter but I fail to see how this is a double IPA, does not reach into that territory. Bitterness does build in the session but it remains almost fruity fresh and almost enjoyable. Yes, not really a double. I expected something more viscous and mouth coating and this is just a APA with personality. However, since I don’t like IPA I think that’s great!

Bottle. A- Citrus, piney. A- Copper color, clear liquid, off white head. T- Peppery, piney, citrus, bitter. P- Medium body, sharp texture, average carbonation, bitter finish. O- At first sip, it really hits the back of the mouth with a pepper kick. The aroma has much more citrus than the taste does. A pretty solid IPA, although I am really curious to know more about these experimental hops.

Bomber bought at Super 1 in CDA, ID. Aroma is grapefruity, piney, doughy, perfumy. Pours slightly hazy golden with a thick off-white pillowy head with excellent retention; leaves some lace. Taste is pretty standard for style. Starts out sweet and finishes with a lingering bitterness; bit of an alcohol burn in the finish. Doesn’t taste experimental. Good but average.
