Hop Henge Experimental IPA is our annual exercise in IBU escalation. An outrageous amount of Centennial and Cascade hops are added to each barrel, with a heavy dry-hop presence as well. It is dense and muscular, with a blend of crystal, pale and carastan malts creating an overall biscuity characteristic. It’s all hop, no apologies.

Bottle. Orange and grapefruit peel aroma. Golden yellow with small head. Sweet earthy orange, biscuit malt, and strong bitter orange peel flavor. Nicely blended.

Bottle. Golden amber with a large white head that lasts well. Lovely wafty grapefruit, kumquat, pine and light honeyed bread aroma. Lowish carbonation, slightly oily but deceptively light-bodied. Sweet with honey and biscuit, zesty and fruity citrus, well defined bitterness shines through but is never harsh. A little medicinal right at the end. Nice but not terribly memorable.

Bottle (2013/2014 9.3% ABV release featuring Chinook and Experimental Hops) poured into a snifter. Best by date of 3/13/2014. Pours a nice clear golden yellow with a finger and a half of off-white head. Good lacing. Aromas of pine, caramel, light dank, floral hops. Tastes of lemon/lime and grapefruit citrus, pine/resin, herbal and floral notes, sweet honey. Medium body with a juicy mouthfeel and a semi-dry finish. Very smooth for the ABV.

Bomber. Pours a nice light orange with a decent head and aromas of soap, citrus and resin. The soap isn’t as pronounced at first and it comes across as lemon, mango and pine, but then as it airs a bit it becomes almost all soap. Flavor also has an old lady soap edge to the front of it that gives way to fruit and a little bit of resin. Not sure what that is all about, but it did somewhat rain on my parade and my expectations for the beer.

Poured from the tap. Clear orangey brown with off white head. Citrus hops aroma, very subtle caramel malt. Same taste, alcohol hidden. Medium body.

Sample at the Ale Wine & Spirits beer tasting on 01/24/2014. The beer pours a clear orange-amber color with a wispy white head that diminishes quickly. Spotty lacing on the glass. Earthy malt, fruit and hops in the nose. Medium-bodied and moderately bitter with fresh fruity hops, malt and caramel flavors. The finish is hoppy with lingering citrus and earthy malt aftertaste. Above average overall.

Reviewed from notes. She pours a nice amber/bronze color and leaves a nice lookin’ body that is somewhat transparent with a one finger white foamy head that rises just a bit and then falls leaving some lacing that just all about in its own sort of way. Light carbonation is seen rising at a moderate pace. The smell has some nice citrus and pine aspects that ride through a nice florally sweet hops up front. Personally, I think this is absolutely awesome to me as there are some lightly malted caramel notes. The taste has a very nice almost perfect bittersweet flavoring through the citrus/pine/floral notes that absolutely graces my mouth and tastebuds; a superb bittersweet citrus/pine/floral aftertaste; light dry somewhat bittersweet finish. On the palate, she sits about a medium, and could be construed as somewhat sessionable - hmm.... but only so much as any DIPA can be but more likely somewhat of what should be a sipper though the ABV doesn’t show too much to me; a decent harshness shows itself on the tongue and mouth to tell you its AIPA quality, but still the sweet maltiness comes through on the mouth and tongue at the right time. Holy wow! Overall, wow, I’m totally impressed. I’m glad I’ve been reinforced by this to continue to love Deschutes. This is absolutely awesome stuff that I would definitely have again.

From very old notes. Had this via bomber, cant remember from where. Bitter with pine and caramel and a good dose of citrus. Pretty awesome.
