Double India Pale Ale (Smokestack Series)

The classic India Pale Ale is a traveler’s beer, aggressively hopped to withstand the long, hot ocean voyage to the British East Indies. Our Double-Wide I.P.A. also travels well, and is right at home in the most exotic ports of call of the Midwest. While this modern-day prairie schooner may not resemble a graceful sailing sloop, our liberal hopping regimen does make her virtually “twister-proof,” with toffee and caramel notes balancing out the lingering bitterness. Enjoy this beer fresh to best appreciate the complex blending of hop aromas, ranging from minty to citrusy, with subtle hints of pine.

Double-Wide I.P.A. uses Columbus and Magnum hops for both bittering and aroma with Chinook hops added in the whirlpool. It is dry hopped with generous amounts of Cascade, Centennial, and Chinook hops. The resulting beer has a hop forward aroma, redolent of peach and apricot. The assertive flavor bursts with the citrus qualities of blood orange and lemon with a slight caramel malt backbone to balance the intense hop flavor. There is little restraint in the flavor of this beer; it is certainly not for the pedestrian palate.

355ml bottle. Hazy, amber beer with a medium off-white head. There are notes of sweet malts, caramel and citrus (grape). It’s moderately sweet and bitter and has a long, dry and bitter finish. Medium-bodied with a quite oily texture and soft carbonation.

Bottle. Pours an amber brown with a small head. Lots of fruity hops in the nose - grapefruit, dark fruits, and pine. Taste is heavy and thick, soapy pine. OK, but not one of my favorites.

Bottle from Alko. Deep amber, thick white head. Aroma is strong herbal notes, tropical fruits, honey, spices, lots going on. Flavor has pine, grapefruit, sweetness, herbalness, hops. Intense, very bitter finish. Alcohol pushing through a little. Full bodied. Heavy stuff.

A reddish beer with a handsome, big and yellowish beige head. The nose is quite intensive, tropical fruits, fructose, grapefruits, and all of these there are lot, fresh. Taste is slightly tropical, piney, lots of citrusfruits, balanced caramell, strong bitterness at the beginning to the end that is piney and slightly resiny. Almost full bodied, not heavy. Strongly bitter, and not too sweet DIPA, despite of intensity, still quite easy drinkability.

Nice fruity aroma of tangerine and grapefruit peel. Opaque orange, medium yellow head. Tangerine dominant flavor. Mild bitterness until lemon zest appears on the back end. Grapefruit also present. Good transitions, tasteful and flavorful. Really nice.

Shared bottle, unknown donator, day two at the GBBF 2013. Unclear copper coloured body. Initially good amount of white foam, slowly diminishing. Toffee sweetness and sweet citrus on the nose. Mid-sweet grapefruit mingled with apricot and caramel leading to a straightforward bittersweet ending that lingers well. Decent IPA, fine bodied (London Olympia 14.08.2013).

Bottle from GBBF 2013 at mR_fr0g’s. Poured a hazy orange colour with a medium, but dense white head. Aroma of soft fruit, pine and caramel. Citrus hop flavour with some unripened berries and candy sugar. Finishes with some dry grains, honeycomb and grapefruit. These smokestack beers keep getting better!

Bottle from Total Wine, Bellevue, Washington, USA. An amber/copper coloured pour with a medium white dense head on top. Hoppy, grapefruit, pine aroma. Tastes hoppy, grapefruit, pine, bitter. Quite complex and clearly well made but a bit too bitter for my palate.

Bottled @ gbbf, small sample. Hazy copper color, short head. Aroma of soft fruity hops, grapefruit, hint of pine, some caramel and toffee. Not really strong, but nicely balanced. Bit sweet and medium bitter in taste. Lacks a bit of power, but balance is great.
