Double India Pale Ale (Smokestack Series)
The classic India Pale Ale is a traveler’s beer, aggressively hopped to withstand the long, hot ocean voyage to the British East Indies. Our Double-Wide I.P.A. also travels well, and is right at home in the most exotic ports of call of the Midwest. While this modern-day prairie schooner may not resemble a graceful sailing sloop, our liberal hopping regimen does make her virtually “twister-proof,” with toffee and caramel notes balancing out the lingering bitterness. Enjoy this beer fresh to best appreciate the complex blending of hop aromas, ranging from minty to citrusy, with subtle hints of pine.
Double-Wide I.P.A. uses Columbus and Magnum hops for both bittering and aroma with Chinook hops added in the whirlpool. It is dry hopped with generous amounts of Cascade, Centennial, and Chinook hops. The resulting beer has a hop forward aroma, redolent of peach and apricot. The assertive flavor bursts with the citrus qualities of blood orange and lemon with a slight caramel malt backbone to balance the intense hop flavor. There is little restraint in the flavor of this beer; it is certainly not for the pedestrian palate.

Bottled, from Systembolaget. Cloudy copper colour, rich head. Intense tropical fruit aroma. Sweet and soft with full body. Malt sweet and intensely hoppy. Lots of mango and salted lychee. Mid bitter finish. Excellent, unusually relaxed double IPA with concentrated flavours and no edges.

Bottle. Almost clear, copper liquid with medium off-white head. Aroma of pine, sweet tropical fruit, marmalade, tangerines, citrus and toffeish caramel malt. Taste is light sweet and medium bitter with notes of light citrus and caramel. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Quite nice aroma, but the taste is a bit to bland. Lacks the punch in the face I want from a DIPA.

750ml bottle from Alko Arkadia
BBE MAR/13 - Vertical with Single Wide IPA - Pours dark reddish orange with a foamy head. Aroma of caramel malts, toffee, grassy hops and hints of ripe fruits. Taste is quite malty and sweetish with some caramel notes, hints of grassy hops. Finishes with a nice hop explosion, loads of fruits, grass, citrus and lemon with some caramely malts and sweetish notes. Okay, quite malty but tasty IIPA.

(Bottle, 0.355 l - BBE something/13, courtesy of rosenbergh, 20121208) The beer poured deep ambed and hazy. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had pine, resin, malts and sweetness. Palate was medium bodied and warming with medium carbonation. Flavours were malts, pine, resin, sweetness, alcohol and bitterness. Aftertaste was hoppy, malty and bitter. Alcohol was pushing through a bit too much but the taste and aroma were otherwise pleasant. Original rating: 7-3-8-3-14=3.5
Re-rate: 0.75 l bottle from Alko Arkadia, no date found. The taste was more intense and alcohol remained better hiddem. The aroma and the raste weren’t much better but the overall impression was better than from the small bottle.

Medium beige head. Hazy deep red body with visible particles. Spicy citric pineapple aroma with oily notes. Bitter-sweet pineapple and resin taste with spicy wooden notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft mouthfeel. Bitter-sweet tropical fruit and pineapple aftertaste with herbal orangey earthy wooden notes. Well. Lots of flavour, but I don’t know that I enjoy it all that much. Too sharp and edgy. (0.75l bottle, wine monopoly, web order.)

Shared bottle @ Patricks. Practically clear reddish orange body with a big, foamy off-white head. Nice but not to dominant in aroma, citric fruit, pine and some caramel. Flavor is sweet and citric fruity, caramel malt, quite bitter. There is a fine balance here between the sweetness and the bitterness. Full body and a pleasant bitter aftertaste. Tasty.
