Double India Pale Ale (Smokestack Series)
The classic India Pale Ale is a traveler’s beer, aggressively hopped to withstand the long, hot ocean voyage to the British East Indies. Our Double-Wide I.P.A. also travels well, and is right at home in the most exotic ports of call of the Midwest. While this modern-day prairie schooner may not resemble a graceful sailing sloop, our liberal hopping regimen does make her virtually “twister-proof,” with toffee and caramel notes balancing out the lingering bitterness. Enjoy this beer fresh to best appreciate the complex blending of hop aromas, ranging from minty to citrusy, with subtle hints of pine.
Double-Wide I.P.A. uses Columbus and Magnum hops for both bittering and aroma with Chinook hops added in the whirlpool. It is dry hopped with generous amounts of Cascade, Centennial, and Chinook hops. The resulting beer has a hop forward aroma, redolent of peach and apricot. The assertive flavor bursts with the citrus qualities of blood orange and lemon with a slight caramel malt backbone to balance the intense hop flavor. There is little restraint in the flavor of this beer; it is certainly not for the pedestrian palate.

Smak och doft av karamell, tropisk frukt, blommig. En maskros-, tall- och örtig beska. Välbalanserad mellan beska och sötma men saknar lite mer humle och fruktig kropp.

Kopparröd med högt rödbeige skum. Söt, fruktigt grape/tall-humlig västkustdoft. Smaken i stil med dften. Mer besk än fruktig. Stabil, men inte superspänstig humle. Stiltypisk och inte för söt. God! Snygg etikett.

Bottle, 75cl corked, at Patricks. A big, dense, off-white head suits on top of a lightly hazy dark golden to amber head. Some lacings. It’s quite sweetish on the nose, with tropical fruits, pine cones and some resins. Quite bitter, but not overly, with tropical fruits, malty sweetness and an orangey, lightly spiced touch. Full body, pleasant carbonation. Lasting finish with a fine bitterness. A fine one indeed. 121108

Poured from a 75 cl bottle at a tasting. Pours clear amber with an off white head. Floral and not over the top bitter. A nice DIPA.

Shared corked 0.75l bottle @ Boulevard tasting. This is a deep cloudy plum-amber one with a large lasting right beige top. On the nose I get lot's of strawberry bubblegum. It's really sweet in the aroma; some malty-caramel with lot's of candied sugar and alcohol. Earthy dried fruits also shines through here. Soft prickling carbonation and a light easy cloudy mouthfeel. More alcohol in the taste. Wood and earth-dry flavors. More dried fruits and a clear Belgian yeasty flavor here. Quite woody almost pungent earthy mouthdrying finish. Not bad, and sure it could have paired nicely up with some food, but not something I have to try again. The alcohol shines a bit to much through. 01.10.2012

Bottle at Boulvard introduction tasting, Bergen. Pours a clear dark amber colour, and a large frothy light beige head. There is a lot of both malt and hops in a great aroma with sweet and dried fruit, peaches, jam, jelly candy, leather and oak. I also find berries in the flavour along with more wood, leather, sweet cherries, grapefruit, and of course hops. The beer has a rich, smooth mouthfeel and a medium to heavy bitterness that really lasts! A rich, nice and wonderful balanced double IPA.

Sample @ Stockholm Beer & Whisky 2012. Pours hazy brownish amber with a frothy brownish reddish white head that doesn’t leave much trace while dissipating. Smell is hoppy fresh and very fruity with grapefruit juice, juicy ripe plums and grapes, caramel, pineapple, papaya, mango, passionfruit, grass, moist soil and hints of pine. Taste is sweet, bitter, slightly malty and fruity with bread, freshly cut grass, pine, caramel, moist soil, resinous wood, peaches, mango, papaya, passionfruit, moist tobacco, grapefruit juice and hints of alcohol. Mouthfeel is round, tiny boozy, tiny astringent and medium bodied. Finish is tiny sweet and bitter with juicy tropical fruits, grapefruit juice, lemon zest, orange zest, pine, resinous wood and moist soil.

Bottle: Poured a coppery orange with a huge frothy off white to beige head. Aroma is a nice blend of hops. Nice gritty hops with lots of citrus grapefruit subtle hints of caramel malt that keeps it slightly balanced. Nice drying finish.

Bottle from GBBF. It pours cloudy deep orange-amber, thick yellow-white head. The nose is orange, peach, apricot, brown bread, something akin to Irn Bru, bubblegum and subtle spice. The taste is wood, resinous, earth, orange, tangy marmalade, peach, spice and underlying alcohol warmth with an assertive bitter finish. Medium body, moderate carbonation and velvety mouth-feel. A pretty damn good double IPA all-round.
