Double India Pale Ale (Smokestack Series)
The classic India Pale Ale is a traveler’s beer, aggressively hopped to withstand the long, hot ocean voyage to the British East Indies. Our Double-Wide I.P.A. also travels well, and is right at home in the most exotic ports of call of the Midwest. While this modern-day prairie schooner may not resemble a graceful sailing sloop, our liberal hopping regimen does make her virtually “twister-proof,” with toffee and caramel notes balancing out the lingering bitterness. Enjoy this beer fresh to best appreciate the complex blending of hop aromas, ranging from minty to citrusy, with subtle hints of pine.
Double-Wide I.P.A. uses Columbus and Magnum hops for both bittering and aroma with Chinook hops added in the whirlpool. It is dry hopped with generous amounts of Cascade, Centennial, and Chinook hops. The resulting beer has a hop forward aroma, redolent of peach and apricot. The assertive flavor bursts with the citrus qualities of blood orange and lemon with a slight caramel malt backbone to balance the intense hop flavor. There is little restraint in the flavor of this beer; it is certainly not for the pedestrian palate.

Bottle. Nice malty nose, lots of caramel, pine, some booze, citrus and grass. Sweet and malty, boozy, with pine and citrus and grass. Very bitter. Good traditional IPA.

Bottle from GBBF, 2012 drank at home. Reddish-amber pour with a beige head. Tropical fruit, pear and peach aroma. Well carbonated. Smooth stuff. Peach, mango and citrus flavour. Very crisp. Good hop linger. Fruity, hoppy finish. Darned tasty!

Bottle thanks to RobertDale. Pours orange amber with off white head. Nose/taste of abrasive citrus rind, caramel malt, grapefruit, apricot pit, pine and resin. Finishes dry citrus rind/resinous pine needle. Medium body.

Corked bottle from QFC - Seattle (Ballard)
Cloudy dark amber color; generous creamy head. Nice aroma, very hoppy, yet balanced: bitter oranges, resins; then some malt and some cheesy yeast in the end. Good body strength, yet the mouthfeel is leaner than the average within the style; good flavor, of caramel, toffee, toasted malt, and (positive point) without the chewy malts; it has strong bitterness, with a good share of resins, some bitter oranges. Very long final.
Potent yet well drinkable and balanced. Excellent.

Lightly hazy orange with a large, lingering head. Aroma is grapefruit and citrus with plenty of caramel, too. Medium bodied. Flavor is pleasant if a bit lighter than expected. Citrus, grapefruit, light sweet caramel malts. Thankfully, not an overly malty sweet DIPA. Real nice.

ChrisO ’Night Of The Gaylords’ tasting. Hazy brown beer. Semi crisp and semi dry palate, a little soft. Rich hops but not really that bitter. Marmalade orange and a little grapefruit. Finishes semi dry. Okay but an uninspiring IPA.

Total Wine, Chantilly 12oz ($3): Pours an amber colour with an off-white head. Aroma is floral and citrus hops, along with some malt backbone. Taste is extremely well-balanced. Bitter with a lingering bitter aftertaste. However, this is not extremely hoppy, but the hop profile is pretty good. As usual, Boulevard does not disappoint.

This beer is a golden-brown color with a medium thick off-white head that burns away slowly. Rings of lacing on the glass. Notes of sweet fruit, hops and malt in the nose. Medium to full body with a moderately bitter hops character offset by sweet tropical fruit and malts. The finish is hoppy with a lingering grapefruit aftertaste. Solid IIPA all around.

bottle - Pours hazy orange with a one finger light tan head. The aroma is big on the citrus hops. The flavor is full of crisp, bitter citrus hops with a little herbal note. It’s medium bodied and quite good though not my favorite among beers of the style.

750 ml bottle. Purchased at Table and Vine. West Springfield, MA. Amber in color with lots of floating particles in the snifter. Massive retention. Nose and taste is complex. I get the whole gambit of hop flavors. Pine, grapefruit and floral hops that is nearly perfectly balanced with a nice amount of malt. Good body with a bread and yeast flavors underneath the hops. Low bitterness with lingering hops in the finish. Has a sweetness that works for me. This is a DIPA I really would drink anytime.
