Said to be hoppier than a hopping mad hopi, our rather good Doctor Okell's takes the 200 year old tradition of the strong India Pale Ale to its ultimate, thanks to one of Dr Mike's finest brewing moments...

Doctor Okell's is an extremely light coloured beer with a surprising full bodied taste. The sweetness is offset by a very strong hopping rate. That gives the finished beer an over all roundness with very spicy lemony notes and a fine dry finish to counteract the initial sweetness.

Ingredients: All pale ale malt, hops, 1st Fuggles and First Gold, 2nd Hallertau and Saaz, 3rd Cascade and Styrian Goldings.

The nose is grandma’s soap. The beer starts the same - mothballs with a great floral aroma. The mothballs go to the background, a dry floral and hoppy beer comes through. Hints of malt, very nice hop-profile. The aftertaste is intense floral, hints of sweetness, hints of malt. Very dry and very floral.
A very nice English IPA. 13/12/13/12

50 cl bottle @ home. Rated on 13.05.2009
Aroma has bready malt, toffee, English hops and hints of hay. Flavour has bready malt, English hops, some fruits and toffee. Also hints of citrus. Decent, not IPA even in British scale.

So, an India Pale Ale from The Isle of Man! Borwn 500ml bottle, best by 28 Nov 09, drank 23 Jul 09. Poured into a vase shaped pint glass, branded as ’Old Speckled Hen’. This glass is rapidly becoming my favourite tasting glass for UK based beers, shows off the colour and head very well each time I use it. Pale amber/light orange body, good firm white head, looks like a lager/pilsner (almost), but without the brightness, although to be fair it is a dull day today! As you’d expect from an IPA the aroma was hoppy, but not much else. Good hop feel to the taste, more hops in the mouth than in the nose. Fairly well balanced, the malted barley evens out the hops nicely although it has a more of a hoppy smack on the palate than of malts. Dry aftertaste, the hops see to that, they also impart a lot of bitterness as the mouth drys after each gulp. Enjoyed it, a pleasant beer to review, not sure I’d buy a case though, unless they were on special offer.

Flaske 0,5l. Gave fra Rune. Lys gylden på farge. Lavt skum som blir helt borte. Svak duft av appelsin. Avrundet og dempet fruktig smak. Litt bitterhet. Tydelig fruktig ettersmak. KI=1

20th September 2008. Pale gold beer. Weak and watery with the only hop characteristic being imparted is an unpleasant bitterness! Drain pour!

Nice citrus aroma with some hints of alcohol on the nose. Looks pretty good, great head, good colour and nice bubbles coming up. Taste is a little watery however, with some dry hops notes and grains. Good mouthfeel. A good refreshing beer for a warm day.

(bottle) Slightly hazy, golden colour with a big and slowly lacing foamy white head. Fresh lemon-fruity and ginger-spicy hoppy aroma with a mildly sweet pale malty background. Light-bitter flavour, light to medium bodied with a crispy, slightly fizzy carbonation. Pale malt-character with a present fruity hops profile; dry and bitter, also minimal sweet and fruity as well as slightly spicy hoppy finish. Nice session beer lacking some depth (18.VIII.09).

(Bottle, Bishop’s Arms, Vasagatan, Stockholm) Golden amber colour with a brief, white head. Fruity nose with notes of apricots, citrus, grainy malt and hints of rubber. Fruity taste with apricots, citrus, grainy malt and grassy, citrussy hops in the finish. Fairly light body, dryish finish. Lacking some malt structure to balance the tasty hop profile.
