Double IPA – A strong and full bodied ale with intense hop characteristics and a deep golden color. Multiple kettle hop additions and generous dry hopping contribute to the powerful bittering and fragrant hop character of this beer. Double IPA pairs nicely with shellfish and spicy dishes.

Rich aroma of caramel, fig, apricot, pine, and pineapple.Cloudy amber, thin lacing head. Medium body. Apricot and rosehip flavor. Bready finish. Sweet then bitter, but never to an extreme. Good balance, distinct transitions, not very complex.. Not fancy, but very good.

bottle pours dark orange with a medium light tan head. Aroma is pine and dank hops. Flavor is caramel and biscuit malts balanced nicely with a pine and grassy hop finish, mild alcohol. Very nice.

The beer pours a bright, hazy orange with yellow-gold highlights. The head is creamy with a hint of beige. The beer has a pretty weak aroma both for a DIPA and a beer of this size. It mostly has that persimmon/apricot/raisin smell of lots of light-ish malt that you normally find in strong pale Belgians. The hop aroma is very weak, just a smattering of floral/peach notes pushing through the heavy curtain of malt. The beer tastes fairly boozy, particularly as it warms. There are more hops evident, but they don’t contribute much more than some bland astringency and fail to reign in the sweet finish. There’s a good deal of malt sugars floating around in this one. Mouthfeel is thick and verges on syrupy, but it’s not too bad given the abv and sweetness. I can’t imagine drinking more than one bottle, but it’s not an awful beer, nor is it particularly hard to get through twelve ounces. Still, at 10% abv, there’s just so much more that could be done with this one. This beer is quite simple for the size and style.

33 cl bottle. Neon orange color, solid white head and lacing. Aroma of onions, hay, grass. Taste has a malty start, then anise, with a bitter finish. Nice balance, not overly bitter.

Lately double IPAs have been making me happy and this one here is not an exception. I don’t know what it is about the combination of hops and high alcohol that I like so much... Basically pours a light bronze amber color with a frothy white head. Flowers and hops and flowery hops dominate the aroma. Taste you get the various different hops flavors manifested. Obviously, the flowery hops take center stage, but there are citrus and piny notes in there as well. Bready feel in the back of the beer. Rather hoppy, but doesn’t leave my mouth to dry. Well-balanced overall.

Bottle - huge thanks to keepersj12. Wow, this was a real treat of a brew that oozed quality in all departments. Slightly hazy copper tinged orange colour with a medium sized lingering frothy white head. Impressive lacing . Aroma was the bizniz.... juicy tropical fruitiness groovin with a basket full of piney hops and some sweet malt hangin out there too. Diig it. . Bit of booze in the mix too. Some initial bitterness, leading to a funky fruitadelic mix of resinous hop and caramel malt. Superb stuff. Dryish finish. Hugely drinkable with the abv deftly masked. This really clicks in a hugely enjoyable way. Hats off.

12 ounce bottle from Total Wine Triangle Plaza, Raleigh, NC. Pours a slightly hazy golden orange color with a medium head. Fair head retention and lacing. Hoppy floral and citrus hop aroma with a bit of nuttiness and caramel. Taste is toffee, caramel with citrus and floral hop notes. For a DIPA I would like more bitterness. Faint alcohol notes. Medium bodied. Decent beer.

When I’m out on the town with company, I use a simple five-point scale to rate beers and keep track of what I try. I find that jotting down copious notes can be out of sync with the spirit of things - in certain situations. Anyway, I rate beers from 1 to 5; Stoudts Double IPA got a 6.

I had this one on tap at Lucky Dog in Brooklyn.
