We craft this much like a sculptor who uses only a hammer and chisel to shape stone into a masterpiece. Hoppe is spawned of these few essentials: barley, wheat, hops, yeast and water. This limited palette is an exercise in minimalism, with refined elements which are deliberately selected. This simple combination creates a golden shimmering brew infused with delicate aromas. The artful nature of this beer is exposed with the first taste. As the malt and hops created a composition of flavors, and elegant finish leaves an impression that your tastes will not soon forget. Don’t be deceived by the innocence of Hoppe. Please enjoy in moderation.

Bottle from jah noth. Hazy light orange body, thin to medium off-white head. Bready aroma with sweet, resinous, pine and citrus hops. Sweet, heavy body with grassy, bitter hops, only slightly faded to age. Fairly clean but basic, cookie-cutter stuff. Give me half the alcohol, and, while we’re at it, half the hops and malt.

Bottle @ Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Pours a clear golden color with a white head. Has a malty hoppy and piney aroma with some grapefruit hints. Sweet malty bitter hoppy grapefruit flavor. The finish is sweet malty and hoppy bitter leaving you with a long bitter aftertaste.

On tap at D’s in Regent Square in Swissvale. Ubiquitous pale yellow amercan lager appearnce. Smells really hoppy. Must be an IPA or something, but now I am surprised to see it is a strong ale! No head. Taste is bitter hops, hops and more hops. Are we sure this is not an IPA? Way too citrus rind chewing bitter hoppy. Oooh boy, can’t taste much else. The flavor even covers the alky content, the alky does not show. Difficult to enjoy. Leaves that dreaded big bitter beer lasting feeling on the back of yer throat and it keeps on going and going like the energizer bunny. IMHO about the same enjoyability as other american strong ales I’ve tasted. On par with the likes of Great Divide Hibernation Ale, Great Lakes Nosferatu and Legacy Hedonism. East End’s Snow Melt may be a better ASA.

Clear gold with a copper tint, and a lasting, foamy head/lace - aroma of lavender, honey, grassy hops, citrus - kind of spicy and peppery, with moderate hop bitterness, some citrus, peach, wildflowers, background tropical fruits - the alcohol is mostly hidden, but gives some warmth in the finish - lingering hops, floral notes and honey sweetness - a slightly plastic, artificial quality starts to crop up in the background from time to time, but otherwise this is quite good.

Bottle thanks to Lowe1983. Pours a light gold with a little haziness. Has a medium, off white head. Aroma is strong citrus hops, pineapple, floral, and some sweet malt. Medium, smooth body. Flavor is pineapple, citrus hops, caramel, malt. The alcohol is almost completely hidden. Could use a little more complexity, but an excellent brew!

Bomber poured into a small tulip glass. Color is yellow gold. Good amount of clarity. I dont need to go far from here this was a BAD hoppy brew. All over in the aroma and the flavor is this musky, oily, fishy, dead musky hoppiness. Just icky to me, a bit root flavored. Hoppy crap beer.

Pours bright, clear gold into a shaker. Bright white micro head leaves spot lacing as it recedes. Fruity pine and resin aromas. Thick and sweet with a lasting grapefruit finish. Imperial Dale’s. Alcohol is well hidden...wish it weren’t so hefty.

Draught at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Clear pale amber, minimal head. Strong lychee-like hop aroma. Sweet and full bodied with clean, rounded mouthfeel. Thick and dominated by soapy, perfumy, juicy citric hops. Punishing almost inky bitterness. Lots of flavours, but more rough than harmonious or complex.

(Draught at Oliver Twist, Stockholm) Orange colour with small white head. Fruity nose with notes of apricots and fresh hops (dry hopped?). Fruity, hoppy taste with notes of grapefruit, apricots, pine needles and resin. Seriously hoppy, but rather one dimensional. Some alcohol sweetness. Very hoppy, but, as stated, rather one dimensional.

Draught chalice at Redbones on 4/10/07
Fluffy white head is medium in size and mostly well-retained atop a clear, golden delicious appleskin colored body with plentiful carbonation and light lacing.
Very hoppy nose boasts tons of dry-hopping and finishing hops. Not a blast of bitterness or acid. Tropical fruits, thick, lush grass and lots of floral aromatics, it’s quite heady and not harried by the malts. Dextrinous, with some honey and very minimal dough, it really lets the hops do their thing. Just a lick of pine sap sits on the finish, reminding of the strength of this stuff. While I find their bottled stuff to be fairly boozey, I thought this was particularly free from alcohol influences. Some light warming on the finish, as expected, but certainly not hot or sharp. Perhaps serving it chilled helped? Aroma strength is high and quite sniffable. I could probably have done without the resinous pine suggestions and just left it at the mango/pineapple-grass, but that’s a minor complaint.
Very dry and attenuated, with dextrinous stickiness and only a bit of biscuity grains. Very crisp, moderately acidic hops dance about the palate and the carbonation is quite spritzy and helps keep the body fairly light for its size. Tangerines, peaches, pink grapefruit and lots of grassiness linger on well with just a slight sweetening on the end, as it warms. Again, I wasnt overpowered at all by any alcohol, though there is some latant acid that builds up on the palate and bites in a bit too much. Great stuff though, love those fresh hop notes.
