Salvation. The name of two intricate Belgian-style ales created by us, Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River Brewing and Adam Avery of Avery Brewing. After becoming friends a few years ago, we realized that we both had a Salvation in our line-ups. Was it going to be a problem? Should one of us relinquish the rights? "Hell no!" we said. In fact, it was quickly decided that we should blend the brews to catch the best qualities of each and create an even more complex libation. In April 2004, in top-secret meeting at Russian River Brewing (well actually it was packed in the pub, and many were looking over our shoulders wondering what the hell was going on), we came up with the perfect blend of the two Salvations. Natalie, Vinnie’s much more significant other, exclaimed, "We should call this Collaboration, not Litigation Ale!" "Perfect!" we shouted. We celebrated deep into the night, (or is it morning?). Fast forward to November 14, 2006. After talking about it for over 2 years we finally decided to pull the trigger and Vinnie flew out to Avery to brew his Salvation exactly as he does in his brewery. This was blended with Avery’s Salvation December 11th, 2006. We hope you enjoy it as much we enjoyed brewing and blending it.

Draft at Alchemy. Thick, unfiltered amber-brown. Solid beige-tan head, foamy. Sweet lemon verbena aroma, balanced out by some clove. A very well done beer, not unlike a Belgian Brown Ale. Lots of depth. Big bodied and intense, quite sweet while still displaying an interesting bitter astringency that coats the mouth. Super authentic Belgian yeast notes. Raisin. Excellent.

22 oz bottle, picked up as it’s probably the closest I’ll get to a Russian River beer in the near future. Pours brown amber with am off-white light tan head. Aroma is sweet with strong aromas of caramel and white bread with hints of dark fruits. Caramel and bread lead the flavor as well, with an alcohol tingle and some dustiness and a few hoppy hints. Almost like a Belgian barley wine. I like this one a lot.

Appearance: Pours slightly hazy copper/amber with a nice off white head, leaving some lacing in the glass
Aroma: Caramel, Belgian candy, fruits, brown sugar
Taste: Belgian yeast and candy, dark fruits, hop bitterness in the finish
I think this beer a very good Belgian Ale. I was looking forward to trying this beer and wasn’t disappointed.

Batch 3 bottle shared with JP, Adam, and Darrell. Aroma was of freshly baked bread. Appearance was muddy light brown with a large light tan head and moderate lacing. Flavor had hints of nutmeg, a hefty amount of malt and pretty decent sourness. Overall a likeable beer.

Bottle, batch 3. Poured a cloudy dark amber with an off-white head that laced nicely. Aroma had a strong alcohol note, kind of like wine as well as caramel and yeast. Flavor was a bit rough with an odd mix of wine flavors and fruity sweetness.

batch 2, sampled july 2009 clear brown with particles. very small yellow head. sour aroma, slight hoppy. sweet caramelly malty, toffee. very very lightlyu sour. hiops seem to e gone. quite sweet and caramelly.

Appearance: Hazy dark orange/red color, decently thin white head
Flavor: A pretty complex sweetness that works pretty well, but not great...
Palate: Decent mouthfeel here, medium to full bodied
Overall Impression: I really like the idea of this beer and the story.
As of today (5/19/09) I've never had anything from Russian River, though I have heard good things, and I'd love to try something fully made by those guys. I have had a few others from Avery and I like what they are trying to do most of the time...

Batch #3. Wow, what a good brew! Pours a darker golden amber color with a white head. Aroma is banana, wheat, other fruits, and a touch of spice. Flavor is extremely complex, nice malty and yeasty flavor throughout.

(Bottle, batch #2, at Pikkulintu, Helsinki, on 2009-01-27) Deep amber. Hazy. Small quickly disappearing white head. Raisin and fruitiness in aroma. Full bodied palate and dry with medium carbonation. Raisin, malts, bitterness, sweetness, light fruitiness and some chocolate in taste. Raisin and bitterness in aftertaste.
