Salvation. The name of two intricate Belgian-style ales created by us, Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River Brewing and Adam Avery of Avery Brewing. After becoming friends a few years ago, we realized that we both had a Salvation in our line-ups. Was it going to be a problem? Should one of us relinquish the rights? "Hell no!" we said. In fact, it was quickly decided that we should blend the brews to catch the best qualities of each and create an even more complex libation. In April 2004, in top-secret meeting at Russian River Brewing (well actually it was packed in the pub, and many were looking over our shoulders wondering what the hell was going on), we came up with the perfect blend of the two Salvations. Natalie, Vinnie’s much more significant other, exclaimed, "We should call this Collaboration, not Litigation Ale!" "Perfect!" we shouted. We celebrated deep into the night, (or is it morning?). Fast forward to November 14, 2006. After talking about it for over 2 years we finally decided to pull the trigger and Vinnie flew out to Avery to brew his Salvation exactly as he does in his brewery. This was blended with Avery’s Salvation December 11th, 2006. We hope you enjoy it as much we enjoyed brewing and blending it.

Batch 6. Enjoyed at room temperature in a wine goblet.

A - Burnt orange / red appearance. Almost no head at all.

S - Some bread, dark fruits and spices. Pepper and cloves? There are some herbs in this but hard to tell.

T - Very sweet up front. Maybe I’m cracking this open too soon. Followed by some banana and kiwi with hints of spices like cloves and basil. Very mild aftertaste but it’s sweet start to finish

M - 40% carbonation. medium body

O - Meh. Just not that great. It’s drinkable though which is good.

Whole Foods, P st, DC 650 ($7.50): Pours a ruby brown with a really nice beige head. Aroma is of some lovely yeast strain and a nice helping of fruitiness. Taste is slightly sweet, but done exactly in the right proportion. Nice malt backbone. A substantial, yet moderate, amount of hop bitterness. Sugary, coated aftertaste. Somewhat dry at the finish. Yeast flavors throughout carrying it through. Reminds me somewhat of De Dolle beers. This is quite delicious.

At RR Brewpub, as Russian River Collaboration at 8.72%. It pours hazy orange-amber, with a thin white head. The nose is chamomile, pear, sweet malt and some dark fruit. The taste is wood, leather, caramel, brown sugar, tangy dark fruit (esp. plum), hay, floral and pear, with a dry finish. Full body, moderate carbonation and slightly chewy mouth-feel. Not bad.

Eher flacher und trockener, hellmalziger Beginn. Dann weiter trocken, Kräuternoten, stimmig, auf Dauer eher etwas monoton. Dann würziger, trockene Süße. 11/8/8/7/7/8

22 oz bomber purchased at Royal in KCMO. Pour is a hazed orange copper with a smallish off white head. Aroma is apple sweet fruit, honey, estery clove yeast and a warming alcohol. Taste is brown sugar sweet malt, with the apple fruit taste close behind, finishing with the stronger clove garlic yeast taste and a dry hot finish. Flavors are well integrated, a bit sweeter and hot then I normally like. Palate is medium bodied, a bit slick and oily, dry yeasty finish.

Batch 3, Feb ’09. Still a beautiful beer after two years, dark and hazy and with a massive off-white head. Taste is good but a bit strange; dried apple and toffee, fig and prune, but all with a dry, hoppy finish. The two flavors don’t meld perfectly together, but they don’t clash, either. I’d love to try a barrel-aged version of this beer; somehow I think oak would work well in the mix. As it is, Collaboration has proven to be tasty both fresh and aged.

Pours a slightly cloudy dark amber with a restrained off white head that laced the glass. Aroma is heavy on the caramel malt and spicy, floral hops, but there is some clove, banana, and phenols hiding in the background. Taste is excellent! Kind of like and IPA mixed with a Belgian strong ale. You get all the goodness of the caramel malt and hops with a restrained Belgian yeast feel to it. Great brew, wish I had more bottles.

22 oz. bottle, split with manuchampions, pours cloudy orangey amber with a small off-white head. Aroma of caramel malts, oranges, yeast and molasses. Rich, complex flavours of these characteristics, with a lingering raisin flavour. Body is quite thick and chewy with a noticeable alcohol punch.

(Bottle, Monk’s Café Wallingatan, Stockholm. Batch #3) Copper colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, fruity nose with notes of dried fruit, caramel, nuts and hints of yeast. Malty, fruity taste with dried fruit, apricots, caramel , wild berries, a hint of yeast, some chocolate and spicy hops. More than medium body. Starts quite sweet but turns drier towards the end. Very well balanced with just a touch of alcohol coming through in the finish. Very nice one.
