Bottle. Malt Attacks. Colour of raspberry jelly. Light haze. Slimmest ring of pink. Nose has blackcurrant. Lemon juice. Quite herbal, along the lines of thyme flowers. A bit lactic. A bit balsamic. Taste is tart sharp and fairly dry. Modicum of sweetness on the lips. Decent body with some grape juice acidity. Tart and fruity finish. I opened this 24 hours ago and didn’t finish it because the acidity was overpowering. It seems to have settled nicely now, though. Decent.

6.9% - Clear cherry pink colour with thin head. Quite thick. Full mouthfeel. Starts a bit funky. Touch of grape sweetness. Nicely balanced. More sourness would be welcome.

French grape ale by one of the still painfully few French microbrewers realizing that the new French beer wave is in dire need of connecting with the ancient French wine tradition – once again I can point to Italy to set the example. This one is a sour ale (of mixed fermentation) aged on wine barrels and macerated with Carignan (40% fresh grapes and 60% ‘égrappe’ so without the stalks). Came from a spectacular magnum bottle served by David Boon at his Bar Beenhouwer during their fourth anniversary weekend – cheers David! Medium thick, moussy, pale pink-white, open and dissolving head, misty fuchsia robe with deep Bordeaux-purple glow. Aroma of grape seeds and skins, roses, rosé wine, blueberries, redcurrant, green tree leaves (probably the stalks of the ‘complete’ Carignan grapes), kefir, damp earth, rosehip, unripe red plum. Sour onset, redcurrant, raspberry, lemon and sour grape, with the Carignan typically not behaving overly juicy but still ‘fleshy’; medium carb, drying lactic yoghurty sourness enlivened by the grapes’ natural acidity, but before things become too acidic, a soothing, ‘warm’ and deep ‘purplish red’ wine flavour sets in, like actual Carignan wine suddenly taking over, bringing tannins (from wood, stalks, seeds and skins), rosehip and bergamot aromas, red berry-like fruitiness and general tart dryness. Could do with a bit more vinosity in mouthfeel perhaps, but a red to rosé wine flavour is definitely there, and strongly so. Another step in the right direction!
