750ml. bottle. @"Ventosa", 07/03/2025
[#8.058 Global - #304 Belgium - #8 Duvel Moortgat]
Pours yellow with visual carbonation and a rocky white head. Aroma: yeast, grain, sugary malts and caramel. Taste: plenty of yeast and esters. Champagne palate. Long yeasty mouthfeel. Not my thing.
Next one, please!

Bottle at tasting. Yellow color, white head. Smell and taste malts, lightly herbal, slightly a sourosh hint or something. Weird. A bit fizzy carbonation. Hmm I don't know. I'm not convinced tbh. Not really my thing.

Huge dense white head over typically spritzy carbonated veiled golden beer with textbook lace. Dry, Duvel yeast, poolwater, pale malts, dried banana. Dry with a faint sweetness, pale malts, dried green leaves, alcohol. Bit peppery, specially in the finish. White candi sugar; warming up, mineral maybe a hint of DMS. Typical Champenoise carbonation. Alcohol hidden, aftertaste has a metallic hoppiness. The blurb concerning the 'unfiltered' nature of the Magritte somehow baffled me, but there is really an explication: classic Duvel Rood is centrifuged to a certain extent, whereas the Magritte is from a selected tank, untreated but for a slight addition of yeast. The brewery recommends to sample the fond to get the full experience of this selected brew. Txs to Stef!

Special luxury version of the classic ‘red’ Duvel, unfiltered and unpasteurized so only a bit different from the regular one but still earning a separate entry, as unfiltered versus filtered versions of the same beer are always classified separately here; celebrates the 125th birthday of famous Belgian artist René Magritte and comes in a bottle depicting his painting “Ciel Bouteille”, a luxurious packing with luxurious box (and booklet) which I assume has to justify the high price tag. Thick and frothy, snow white, membrane-lacing head, almost a typical ‘Duvel’ head but not as big, less foamy and somewhat less stable; hazy pure pale golden robe, clearly unfiltered indeed, with far less visible sparkling than the ordinary version and turning a bit ‘milky’ with sediment in the end. Aroma of green pear, straw, old white bread, cow fodder, corn water from a can (oddly), Poire William, leftover dough, sourdough even, field flowers (Saaz), dust, bubblegum, unripe banana. Crisp onset, some sweetishness reminiscent of green banana or green pear, light apple-ish acetaldehyde, minerally carbonation but notably softer than ordinary Duvel; ongoing sourish undertone from the yeast, a bit sourdough-like through a white-bready, cereally malt bill with generally dryish character, even if a thin layer of honeyish sweetishness is there. Green fruitiness lingers along with a floral and grassy hop bitter accent, a bit more ‘outstretched’ than in the regular Duvel – but I guess it is the flavour-absorbing properties of the yeast which accentuates this bitterness here, as the hops used are the same in varieties and dosage. Warming, Poire William-like alcohol ensues, as in the ordinary one. Obviously all the typical Duvel flavours are here, but this Magritte version does come across like a slightly different beer altogether, with more yeasty sourness, yeast bitterness and breadiness, as well as a softer, less harshly carbonated mouthfeel. Other than that, this is of course another cleverly designed marketing gimmick and certainly not worth the hefty price tag, less so even than those yearly barrel aged Duvels.
