This is a brew for adventurous beer drinkers. It is brewed with four malts: two row pale Harrington, Munich malt, chocolate malt, and a rare peat smoked malt commonly used by distillers of Scotch malt whiskey. This unique malt gives Samuel Adams® Scotch Ale its distinct, subtle smoky character and deep amber hue. Samuel Adams® Scotch Ale is brewed using traditional English hops, Goldings and Fuggles. This is a big brew dominated by malt flavors and aromas, rich and full bodied, slightly sweet. Its layered malt complexity lingers to a smooth and silky finish.

12oz bottle poured a brilliant clear amber with frothy tan head and modest sheet lacing. The aroma is roasty malts with a fair amount of peated malts laced with some earthiness and faint smokiness. Pretty nice really. Just like the nose I get bold flavors from roasted and peated malts followed by earthiness. Beyond midway the peat and mild smokiness take over the flavor and then fade to equal strength with the malts at the finish. Flavors could be melded better since they seem disjointed some. Into the after taste roasted, peated and faint smoked malts linger.

Bottle. Pours a dark reddish brown color with a medium light tan head that diminshes quickly. The aroma is a roasted malt with black licorice. Decent lacing on the glass. The taste is a roasted malt with chocolate and licorice. One of the best brews by samuel adams, a very good scotch ale.

Bottle. Pours rubious brown, small whiteish head. Aromas of coffee, deep fruits, and malt. Flavor starts off slightly sweet and finishes with a bitter coffee-grind flavor, which overwhelms. Goes downhill from the first sip.

Pretty thin and lacking in "ummmpf" for the style - a tiny bit of smoke and some wood - a small plum/chocolate flavor presents itself - flowery hops in the finish - it never really comes together very well, though.

Bottle. Strong chocolate malt aroma with light smokiness. Dark reddish brown with small head. Moderately strong smoky malt flavor - light hops finish. Very nice - smoky malt flavor without the sweetness you often get in this style.
