This is a brew for adventurous beer drinkers. It is brewed with four malts: two row pale Harrington, Munich malt, chocolate malt, and a rare peat smoked malt commonly used by distillers of Scotch malt whiskey. This unique malt gives Samuel Adams® Scotch Ale its distinct, subtle smoky character and deep amber hue. Samuel Adams® Scotch Ale is brewed using traditional English hops, Goldings and Fuggles. This is a big brew dominated by malt flavors and aromas, rich and full bodied, slightly sweet. Its layered malt complexity lingers to a smooth and silky finish.

12 oz bottle into mug. Aroma is smoky malt, cinnamon. Pours deep amber with a nice head and lacework. Tastes of smoky burnt wood, licorice, alcohol. Medium carbonation. Finishes with an alcoholic bite. Better than I was expecting, but I’m no fan of this style. 4,4,6,4,14=3.2.

That rating up there is from 2010. I rarely re-rate things, but this needs an update. I really lowballed that. Since that review, I’ve come to love smoked beers above all others. I don’t remember this beer being this peaty and smoky. Beautiful clear amber hue with a long-lasting beige lacy head. Taste is lightly sweet, lots of smoke, medium-level bitter finish. Really nice beer.

This was a nice surprise from a brewer that usually does two things i dont like, makes beers that are too middle of the road, or makes stupid concoctions that no one in their right mind would want, but this was nice. great hop/malt balance, not too sweet aftertaste which is also indicitive of most SA beers. good session beer, not too high in ABV, and didnt get sick of it quickly.

12oz bottle. Filtered amber-brown, thin beige head. Sweet, medium to full bodied. True to style, rather creamy. A mellow but ever-present hop balance. Smooth caramel and brown sugar notes. Pretty nice, for a session beer.

Overall Impression: It's a pretty nice beer, malty overtones, spice, smoke, another solid enjoyable beer from our friends in Boston.

Bottle thanks to ilovedarkbeer. Pours with a tan head and a hazy amber body. Aroma is weird with a strong rochefort (Blue) cheese quality, with hints of caramel, and peat. Taste is caramel, peat, cheese, prunes, grapes and a bit of smoke. Watery mouthfeel, lively bubbles and a bitter finish.

Pours mahogany into a thistle. Creamy pancake head leaves sheets as it slowly recedes. I don’t pick up any aromas. Smoky caramel from front to back. Crisp, dry, lasting smoke finish.

Bottle. I love this color in a beer... I’d call it brown with reddish highlights, but in the light it turns almost completely red. Head is about a finger of dense, tan foam and is lacing nicely as it dies back. Aromas are sweet, toffee like malt with a little bit of a nutty scent and a hint of hops. Flavor is really interesting... heavy malt sweetness with a nicely done smokey edge to it. This is really good... wondering whether it is a stong year for it or what...

Bottle from the SA variety pack. Pours deep red with a small light head. Kind of dull in the flavor with a weak malt profile followed with light bittering.

Darker color but not really dark brown, more like dark iced tea. Aroma? Well, it’s a little off at first when you pop the lid then in the glass it gets more tannic and sweet. Flavor is personable, more than you expect in an SA. Finish comes across as if it was a higher alky content than it is. Craft brew from a mass producer. Nowhere near the enjoyability of Sprague Farm Fighting Scotchtoberfest but certainly better than McEwans.

Bottle. Pours a chestnut color with decent sized head and good lacing. Straightforward toffee aroma. The taste is very earthy at the beginning, then mellows out. Nice bitterness.
