This is a brew for adventurous beer drinkers. It is brewed with four malts: two row pale Harrington, Munich malt, chocolate malt, and a rare peat smoked malt commonly used by distillers of Scotch malt whiskey. This unique malt gives Samuel Adams® Scotch Ale its distinct, subtle smoky character and deep amber hue. Samuel Adams® Scotch Ale is brewed using traditional English hops, Goldings and Fuggles. This is a big brew dominated by malt flavors and aromas, rich and full bodied, slightly sweet. Its layered malt complexity lingers to a smooth and silky finish.

Bouteille 12oz. (2006)

Clear deep amber - brown beer. Small white head. Light palate. Nice even malt, slightly sweet. Subtle dried fruits underneath. Semi dry finish. Scotch ales, I’ve decided, are not my thing but there is nothing wrong with this.

bottle - Pours amber with a one finger head. It smells of toasted caramel malt. The flavor is sweet, toasted caramel malt, very mild hops bitterness, and a touch of smoky peat. It’s medium bodied and easy drinking. Like many Sam Adams beers, it’s a decent craft brew but not outstanding.

0.355l bottle. Pours a deep amber body with a thin off-white head leaving some lacings. Aroma is caramel, dark malts, thin hops and a hint of thin chocolate . Quite watery palate, medium bodied and low carbonation. Tastes light caramel - kinda sweet with notes of lightly smoked malts, dark hops and the whole thing ends with a thin, light hopy and semi-dry finish. Almost no aftertaste what so ever.

Pours a deep amber with a small ecru head. Light caramel malt and a touch of floral hops make up the aroma. Mild to medium sweet with a malty finish. Just a touch of hop bitterness. Mouthfeel is pretty standard for a SA beer - medium to light carbonation and a bit slick. Not a bad beer. More flavor than expected in a 5.4% abv beer. Decent stuff.

12 oz bottle poured dark copper/brown with half finger, bubbly head. Aroma is bready with a little bit of sweetness. Taste is a touch of a bready biscuit. Why do all the regular Sam Adams have the same damn smell? Only sample in a 12 pack, don’t bother buying. Blah!

From a mixed box at the Natomas Bevmo. Pours dark amber with a creamy tan head. Aroma is malty. Not getting smoke. Med body. Flavor is light roast caramel with some chocolate notes. Maybe a little peat towards the finish. Definitely some bitter - going for floral there. Finishes much drier than expected.

12 oz bottle. Pours clear amber with an off-white head. Aroma is of raisin and earthy peatiness with some toffee and a little banana. Flavor hints at dark fruitiness before turning more strongly to earthy, peaty malts and toasted malts with a touch of smoke. Maybe a pecan-like note. I like the flavors, but the palate proves problematic. It just keeps thinning out, leaving just a bitter, earthy finish. Almost there.
