A dark and heavy ale - the strongest that the brewery has ever produced - in which three varieties of malt and two spices are utilised. It is brewed "in honour of" the Burgundian Babble Belt, a well known web-site on the Internet, where beer lovers can exchange all sorts of information.

Bottle from Tanakaya. Cloudy/murky golden brown colour. Not much head and what is there soon disappears. Aroma is boozy and fruity. Quite sweet too. Plums, raisins, bit of candy too and something indistinct but perfumey. Taste is less full on than the % might suggest. Once again, boozy fruits, sugary sweetness, caramel malt. Herbs and spices too. Very easy to drink given the %, but not really grabbing me. Smoothed off spirit elements. Could feel the booze afterwards though. Bit of a disappointment, all booze, not so much taste.

Bottle, Café t Klooster Delft. Alcoholic, obviously, but also some malty fruitiness. Raisin, grapefruit, but also touches of rosebuds and banana. Well carbonated with a touch of yeast character.

11/11/2018 @ sample of 33cl bottle @ Vergeten Bieren tasting, Brouwerij Smisje shared with Koen and the brewer himself. 2011 version. Red orange colour, medium head. Nose is malts, caramel, red fruits. Taste is malts, caramel, bit nuts, cherries, bit earthy touch. This realy felt like on Oud Bruin. Probably the best Smsisje beer I ever drank.

Sample from 2007 bottle at Kurtkeller 026: Summer-tastic 01 on 06/25/2017. Pours a reddish-brown color with a thick light beige head that recedes quickly to an outer ring. Small patches of lacing. Aroma of soy sauce, malt and fruit. Full-bodied with flavors of syrupy fruit, soy sauce and yeast. The finish is dark fruits and more soy sauce. Average overall.

It looks like a clear copper coloured brew with a small but persistent head of foam, usual good lacing from a Belgian beer.

The smell, well, it’s very similar to an aged UK Old or Barley Wine. Lots of caramel malt more than hinting notes of Port. Aged Thomas Hardy or JR Lee’s, anyone?

The taste just verifies what I said about the smell, to the letter.

Very nice mouthfeel with lightish carbonation to with the medium body

It drinks like a champion of an Old Ale/Barleywine. I have to get more.

Beer formerly made for the Burgundian Babble Belt, with a creamy, yellowish white head, thick but not too stable, and a bronze colour, cloudy with deposit. Rich aroma of nutty malts, whisky, pear, caramel, ginger, liquorice, cheese, tobacco, white pepper, tomato, mango and, if you’re familiar with their perfumes, the effectively used valerian and lemon balm also shine through. Sweet fruity taste, caramelly and nutty malt base, spicy (cloves and ginger), hint of lemon balm again but very subtle, warm alcoholic finish with floral, mild hoppiness; alcohol very well masked. This was a great spiced barley wine, too bad it isn’t made anymore.

Unique beer, a strong dark ale, brewed with dates. It’s sweet, yeasty, malty and fruity in a special way. Very good.

(Bottle, 0.33 l, at Cafe Thembi, Maastricht, 20130603) The beer poured reddish brown and hazy. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had malts, chcolate and caramell. Palate was medium bodied and warming with a lot of carbonation. Flavours were malts, sweetness, chocolate, caramell, dried plum and bitterness. Aftertaste was sweet and malty. Alcohol was a bit too much present but the otherwise the beer was pretty good and balanced.
