Bottle. 2002 Vintage. Reddish amber brown beer with a beige head. Malt, raisin, fig, and plum in the aroma. Rich fruity malt flavor with some spice and caramel. Plum and dates. Lingering caramel sweet malt. Alcohol is noticeable. Slight lemon freshness at end.

Cloudy orange color, big off-white head. Weak aroma, bit malty. Sweet malty taste, sugar, hardly any alcohol present. Quite good balanced.

(Bottle 33 cl) Reddish amber, slightly hazy. Sweetish, vinuos scent of desert wine. Soft flavours of sweetish, roasted malt, raisins and other dried fruits - perhaps even overripe fruits. And again notes of desert wine in the flavours. Very delicious and delicate. A real warming nightcap. 260705

An unclear brown beer with no head. The aroam is sweet spicy. While the flavor is very sweet with notes of caramel, oranges, and spices - of which coriander stands out. The end is spicy dry.

Brewed in 2002. Substantially hazy orange-red body, big puffy cream head (in contrast to what many raters appear to be getting). Aroma of sour, musty fruit, wet socks, honey-drizzled biscuits, herbs, toffee, and old fabric. Sweet, caramely body, nicely yeasty, with candied fruits (including cherry and plum), honey, and toast. After awhile apple flavors really show up. To be honest the flavor profile reminds me of a Rochefort, but on the fruitier side. Looks like there are good and bad bottles out there. My sample is quite tasty.

Hazy dark copper brown-red, no head. Like sayravai said, a bit like sahti. Aroma has roasted malts and vegetables. Wineous, and barley-wine like dark roast and rye bread. Flat mouthfeel - not much carbonation. Alcohol is well hidden but not very enjoyable - almost thin and watery palate.

Slightly hazy amber coloured body with a small (almost non-existant) ugly large-bubbled head. Aroma of alcohol, caramel, blood, metal, corn and nothing else pleasant. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong maltiness up front followed by large caramel and burnt sugars with a strong peach flavour-all masked by a large alcohol presence. Aftertaste shows alcohol and metal-not pleasant. Overall, not a good beer at all-this one was almost horrible. Don’t waste money on this one-go for any St. Bernardus beer! This one lacked carbonation, it was almost still, plus its flavours weren’t great. I sampled this bottle fresh (I bought it the day earlier at a market quick on turn-around), so that wasn’t an issue at all. I sampled this 33 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Vienna, Virginia on 14-November-2004.

[brewed in 2002] Pours a dark brown with hints of strawberry in the color - huge floaties in this one - frothy head, high carbonation - mildly sweet aroma of fruits (cherries, apples, grapes), caramel, a touch of chocolate - tingly carbonation softens as the beer warms - surprising hop profile for the style (though I wouldn’t go so far as to call it "hoppy") - chocolate, toffee, an array of spices I can’t place - quite a sweet finish, with lots of belgian candy sugar noticable - the high ABV is quite well-masked, just adding a nice bit of warmth - nice.

AOBF 04. 2003 Bottle. Medium dark brown with some light cherry reds and duller browns. Small off-white head. Aroma was not terribly interesting, somewhat dry spices (whatever it is, it adds too much astringency) and some light caramel notes. Flavor is dry, lightly toasty and astringent. Body is only medium and the big belgian yeast character I’m looking for never really comes out. Some light hints of dark fruit and a dry, almost bitter finish with some mildly pervasive alcohol. Not terribly impressed. Sweetness only seemed moderate at best. Mouthfeel is pretty flat and uninteresting.

Cloudy amber color. Strong malt aroma, Barley Wine style. Strong mouthfeel, sweet in the front, strong character: a lot of malt, caramel, light liquorice, hop, some spices. Ends very bitter and quite long. Very well brewed, quite hiding the alcohol, incredible strong flavor.
