Former name: "St. Michaelsberg Dunkel" brewed by "Maisel Bräu", Bamberg, Germany (closed in 2008).

1122 – the first evidence that monks brewed fine quality beer at the monastery goes back to this year.
The St. Michaelsberg Original Dunkel is fully steeped in this tradition recreating a taste that is the origin of all major German beer styles and another speciality of Bavaria. A Dark chestnut caramel colored rustic and hearty beer with a soft, elegant and strong malt aroma with a firm, creamy and long lasting head and sweet and dry finish makes it the perfect beer for dinners with meat-dishes.

(bottle, bought in Hirschaid at Franky´s Getränkemarkt) Clear, dark brown coloured hue with a light reddish shine and a medium-sized, not very persistent off-white foamy head. Sweet and toasted dark malty and nutty nose with a fruity note and a tinge of caramel. Moderately sweet, slightly bitter flavour, toast-malty taste with soft notes of caramel, light bodied with a lively carbonation; rather dry and slim, slightly toasted finish. Likeable.
