Bottle at Cafe Abseits, Bamberg 5/11/07. Dark brown coloured with a lasting, foamy tan head. Light smoke aroma with balancing caramel and some earthy hops. The flavour started with some smoked ham rounded by sweet malt and a long dry finish. Excellent.

Bottle, thanks to Lach (mullet) for bringing this to me from Bavaria.
Deep brown body. Off-white, rocky-creamy head. Quite nice looks. Aroma of charcoal which is almost totally burnt, ashes, hops, ... even a bit soapy. Quite nice aroma, but not great. There is a nice aroma, but you have to sniff really hard to get it. :) Lighthly sweet initial flavour. Moderately bitter, lightly sweet finish. There is again a nice smokiness in the beer, but not from the real beginning. At first only somewhat sweet, but immediately after (I wouldn’t call it the finish yet) the smokiness pops up. The beer is extremely well balanced with a nice complexity. I love it.

On tap at the Berliner Bierfestival. Clear, copper body with a beige head. The aroma has some smoke, as well as caramel, a light breadyness and a nice fruity hoppiness. Not overly smoked flavor either, but it is smoked. Caramel, fruit and hops are evident as well. It has a medium to full body and a nice, bitter finish. A really pleasant and quaffable beer I would like to drink again. I had a Schlenkerla rauch just before, and that may have messed with the experience, but hopefully not. (070804)

Test vom 26.8.2007, Gebinde: Fass Noten: 9,11,11,13,8,11 - 10,95

Small, yellow-amberish head over deep mahogany beer with some orange highlights. Sweet & smoked nose, slightly salty-meaty (or fishy - smoked mackerel?) but quite restrained. OTOH, an aroma of smoked honey, if that’s feasible - honey-cured ham, perhaps? Bit of Oolong tea as well. Tea (Oolong/Souchong), tea marmalade with no sugar; slight, restrained smokiness, smokesalt; fruity even with slightly bitter oranges. Warming up, I get a point of diacetyl. Quite refreshing, a bit as ice(smoked)tea, but not much depth nor body. Then, it’s only 4.9%. Nice, easy (introduction?) Rauch. For the cautious but willing novices (big grin). And another - bang! - smoked - pfffff! Danke, Sebastian!
