1 litre bottle from draft. Clear gold, thin white head. Aroma of creamy malts, citrus, vegetable starch. Taste is semi-sweet malts, some caramel, lemon, light flora. A bit cleaner than the aroma suggested. Smooth body, medium carbonation. Nothing special but its enjoyable enough.

Münchener Helles by one of Germany's industry leaders, from tap at a restaurant in Frankfurt am Main. Medium thick, snow white, sparsely lacing, moussey head, clear and pure warm golden blonde robe with strings of sparkling. Aroma of white bread crust, raw cereals, freshly cut grass, minerals, wet cotton cloth, hints of gypsum and dried chamomile. Clean, crisp onset, minerally carbonation with smooth body; slick cereally and grainy core, sweetish in a pure malty way, gently and agreeably bittered by grassy, floral hops, adding a soft drying effect. Very well balanced Helles - industrial perhaps, but the Reinheitsgebot guarantees the pureness I appreciate a lot in the German Lager family. Quenching and enjoyable, though the lovely setting of a rooftop restaurant in futuristic Frankfurt may have helped...

Bottle in Munich. The second M.J. 500 beer of this trip. I'm sure that I've had it before, just never taken any notes. Wondering if it still holds up, particularly as Spaten seems to have lost much of its goodness. Malty nose with a lemony hop touch. Bready, crackery. Clear medium gold with a low head. Bready, slightly doughy flavor, lemon, herbs, lightly bitter finish. Great balance, a proper traditional Helles for sure, though I have had better on this trip. The label is lovely. I need to track it down on tap... Had it on Tap at Andy's and it wasn't much better. Not bad, but not great.
