In early 2014, Tony Gwynn’s team approached AleSmith to create a distinctive beer for the baseball legend. A meeting was called at the Gwynn household, which included a sampling of AleSmith beers to identify Tony’s preferences. He wanted the beer to be “light with a kick” which he elaborated further to mean full of hop character and light in body and color. The result of the Gwynn family’s feedback on test batches rendered a golden pale ale full of American hop flavor and aroma, with a subdued bitterness and a malty sweet finish. AleSmith San Diego Pale Ale .394 pays tribute to the city that Tony loved and the career-high batting average that he achieved in ‘94. Discover what happens when a Hall of Fame perfectionist crafts a beer with a world-class brewery. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Tony and Alicia Gwynn Foundation (TAG).

1$ can on bargain shelf. Pour is hazy pale gold. Slight pine nose. First taste is some caramel, sweeter than expected; almost like a helles or a vienna, weird. My taste buds must be off. In the middle I'm getting more bitter hops, its building a slightly cloying effect. A little carbonation helps this to me more palatable but its starting to rub me the wrong way. Yea, a helles or a vienna with some bitter cloying ale attitude. What esle can be said? There, you have it. A little worse than I was expecting. Borders on the lighter end of a sweet IPA. Long syrupy bitter rude mouth coating treacly finish. Needs more zesty carbonation.

355ml can, bought from djoeye. Pours an huge white head over a misty golden body, crocheted lacing. Inviting smell of ripe orange and bread-like malts. Fine blended taste of biscuit, dried fruits, and soft citrus. Bittersweet ending. Fine depth to it. Likeable. (Tromsø, 26.01.2024).

Can at BBT 12/2023. Pretty classic American pale ale. Rather thin body, med-high carbonation. Medium bitterness, low sweetness. Light caramelly maltiness, a bit of oxidation, moderate piney resiny citrusy hops character. A bit candyish. Classic, not very exciting, but well made. Good.

Can 35,5 cl. Clear, deep golden with a white head. Piney, citrusy hop aroma. Medium body, very smooth on the palate, a dry fruitiness with a solid, finishing bitterness. A very well made APA. 071223
