Harvey’s Porter was first in its class and overall runner-up at the 1995 GBBF at Olympia. In 1999 it was chosen as the ‘Ultimate Pizza Beer’ in the Beauty of Hops awards

500mL bottle. Pours nearly black with a beige head. Light roasted malts and nuts on the nose. Flavour has very dry roasted malts, pretty earthy, some husky roasted nuts. An iron-y mineral character developing more as it comes to temperature. Medium-bodied. Great, cozy English ale.

nice light brown head. Aroma is roasted malt, some smoke, and a light nuttiness. Flavour is slightly roasty, i’m getting a HUGE metallic taste i just cant shake, it lingers quite a bit. The finish is bitter, and smokey. As i get near the bottom of my glass, the metallic tatse seems to mellow a bit, but its still there. But now i can taste the roasty nuttiness in the flavour, a decent porter, without the metallic tatse, would have been awesome.

550ml bottle purchased from the Offie, Leicester, and drunk at home. Lovely colour, almost liquorice black with a good ring on khaki head. Roast malt, ash, some plummy character on the nose. Bittersweet with burnt malty character holding back the sweetness. Bitterness increases nearing the end of the sip with a slightly drying finish. Medium body, carbonation is low. Too low. All in all it’s a pretty lovely porter, and nice to bump up my low Harvey’s rates.

500 ml bottle, as Harvey's Porter, from Seven Cellars. ABV is 4.8%. Black colour, large tan head. Aroma of moderately roasted malts, chocolate and mild coffee. Smooth flavour, medium dry, with the same elements as the aroma, a hint of prunes. Noticeable bittering hops.

Bottle from Harveys Brewery Shop. Pours a pitch black colour with a thin creamy beige head. Aromas of roasted malts, chocolate, caramel, toffee, nuts and hints of coffee. Taste is the same notes as the aroma with an added grassy hop bitterness and a little liquorice. Thin to medium bodied with a lovely smooth mouthfeel and a long chocolate, roast and grassy hop finish. Nice porter.

Pours black, small tanned head. Smell is medium intense, roasty , pretty blank otherwise. Taste is full, very roasty, burnt, ashy, yet sharp , ashyness rises even more in the aftertaste. Burnt chocolate, higher bitterness than expected ( or prefered ). Decent porter though.

Bottle. Deep dark brown color, almost black. Grapes and roasted malt in the aroma. Coffee, roasted malt and grapes in the flavor. Just a touch of malty sweetness. Very pleasant beer, although a bit thin.

500 ml bottle at the Royal Oak. First new MJ 500 tick of this trip. Pitch black with a talll, bubbly head. Nose is chocolate, light coffee, a bit of soy sauce. Soft and chocolatey flavor, not sweet, minerals, grassy hop, lightly roasted. Very nice, easy drinking, wth huge flavors. The hops are noticeable, the roast not too much, and not too sweet. I would say that this is still a representative British porter.

4/4/2018. Bottle at Cobbetts, Dorking. Pours almost black with a small off-white to beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, hop, toffee, liquorice and a hint of coffee. Medium sweetness, moderate roasted bitterness. Moderate body, somewhat thin texture, soft carbonation. Ok but expected better and not one of Harvey's better ones.
