Bock beer, released in celebration of the arrival of spring, is an ancient and mysterious part of the brewing tradition. Over time, the term "bock" has come to mean a beer darker and stronger than the brewery’s regular brew. This is the first time we have brewed a bock at Anchor Brewing Co., and we hope you will find it to be a rich and flavorful addition to our offerings. San Francisco’s Anchor Bock Beer is virtually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam® Beer, in one of the most traditional small breweries in the world.

Bottle a gift from Odeed, thanks Jacob; Nose at first showed apples, then changed to caramel malt and raisins; color dark but transparent brown with a medium tan head; flavor malty with chocolate, caramel, and molasses.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown almost black colour with a big tan head. Roasted malty aroma with some spicy hints. Also some hints of licourice. Has a roasted malty flavor with hints of caramel and licourice. Also some spicy and hoppy hints. Dry spicy finish with some bitterness.

Deep dark light absorbing brown that can be coaxed into some garnet highlights with intense backlight. Thick creamy tan head. Malt and brown sugar aroma. The flavor is full of sweet malt with little to no hop bitterness or flavor. Could perhaps use a bit more body, but this is not really thin in any way. A bit of tang in the finish, perhaps from the wheat malt.

(Bottle 65 cl) Pours a clear, dark mahogany with an orange hue and a handsome, beige head. Aroma of hard roasted malt. Medium-bodied with very dry, hard roasted malts - vaguely burned actually. Also some accents of good aroma hops. A pleasant albeit rather unusual Bock. 110606

Inspite of what the descriptions says, my friend picked this up at Systembolaget in Sweden - not exactly the Bay Area.A deep red beer with a dense brown head. The aroma is sweet with primary notes of herbs, but also a light touch of caramel. The flavor is sweet with a nice roastyness to it, but also a herbal note. I’m not that fond of the herbal notes - I wonder if it is the hops?

bottle, trip to san fran. Poured very dark with a small creamy head that faded quickly. The color is black, darker than a lot of doppelbocks. The aroma is mellow, smells of chocoalte and a hint of hops. Flavor is wel balanced, light for such a dark beer but the body is medium. Nothing distinctive in the flavor but smooth and refreshing. Delecious, refreshing, not overpowering, recommed it and would have again.

Loved this one the first time I had it (4.3) and really thought the malt character was outstanding. Six years later, how does it stack up? Dark brown with a thin head. There are some rich caramel notes in the aroma with a light toastiness. The malts are toasty first with light caramels. Unfortunately, the malts thin out in the finish. Not nearly as good as I had it before.

Bottled. Near black, minimal head. The aroma holds coffee, lactic acid and berries. Surprisingly light bodied with hard crystal malt character. Notes of papery malt and chocolate. Fairly low bitterness. There’s lots of good stuff in here, but a bock needs a big, soft maltiness - not hard, sharp crystal malt.

Dark color, medium creamy brown head. Aroma of roasted malts, licorice and chocolate, but overwhelmed also by strong hops, which give the aroma a specific character. Creamy texture, smooth taste. Slightly sourish, initially sweet chocolat and malty taste. Towards the end it becomes very bitter. I guess this is a typical American Bock: bigger, stronger, but also better than the classic bocks? Good stuff.
