Bock beer, released in celebration of the arrival of spring, is an ancient and mysterious part of the brewing tradition. Over time, the term "bock" has come to mean a beer darker and stronger than the brewery’s regular brew. This is the first time we have brewed a bock at Anchor Brewing Co., and we hope you will find it to be a rich and flavorful addition to our offerings. San Francisco’s Anchor Bock Beer is virtually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam® Beer, in one of the most traditional small breweries in the world.

12 ounce bottle into pilsener glass, bottled 1/18/2012. Pours crystal clear reddish brown color with a nice 1-2 finger dense tan head with fantastic retention that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Some decent lacing on the glass, with plenty of carbonation streaming up. Aromas of light chocolate, biscuit, toasted malt, apricot, fig, raisin, caramel, molasses, and herbal hops. Nice aromas, with a good amount of balance and decent strength. Taste of caramel, chocolate, biscuit, raisin, fig, prune, molasses, toasted malt, and herbal hops. Nice balance of flavors with a decent amount of robustness; and no cloying sweetness. Medium carbonation and body; with a slight creamy and very smooth mouthfeel. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming present at all on the finish. Overall this is a very nice and enjoyable bock. Nice toasted flavors with good balance, and very smooth to drink. A nice session beer candidate.

Rich like a black forest cake. Aroma of sweet malts, some honey, licorice, and a little roasty bready malts. dark brown pour with a white head that dissipated very quickly. Molasses, honey, and bread in the flavor, towards the end of the pint, things got a little too sickly sweet for me, the sugars dominate the flavor.

Bottle @ home. Deep brown appearance with a light brown head. Super toasty, burnt bready, creamy, nutty aroma. Creamy, burnt, toasty malty, nutty, a touch charred flavor. I haven’t had this one in a few years but it’s not as good as I remembered.

Pours dark brown with a medium beige head. Aroma of chocolate, cookies, caramel malts and coffee. Taste is quite malty and bready with notes of rye, caramel and sweet syrup. Finish has bitter and malty notes. Okay, well balanced bock.

Colabrown beer with a medium, beautiful, thick and light brown head. Aroma is malty, berries, strawberries, nice aroma. Taste is also malty, berries, some roasted malts, more bitterness than usually at bocks, and bitterness is sightly wooden. Medium bodied with medium carbonation, however, less carbonation could be better. Quite nice beer, but I expected more because of great brewer. Malty and surprisingly, lots of berries in this bock.

35,5 cl bottle @ home, BBE 12/2012
Flavour is rather interesting mix of American hops and roasted malt typical to bocks. Exotic fruits and hints of coffee, chocolate, licorice and berry juice. Flavour is hoppy too with exotic fruits at the beginning and finish with coffee, chocolate and licorice. Also Anchor house flavour is present. A bit thin palate. Really not your typical bock but rather unique and nice, especially when looking at the ABV.
