Bottle. Looks like a good grade b maple syrup with a tan head, medium sized. Aroma is a tad mellower and maybe earthier than your typical doppelbock. Almost porter-esque in taste, with coffee, chocolate and maybe some root beer. Nice job.

[i] Bottle from BOE 29-09-07 [/i]Poured dark amber as description states with a tan head. Aroma not striking but there were some dark molasses. Taste initially was of black treacle and alcohol this tasted a bit rough around the edges some prunes, fine beer but not the best of this style.

Clear dark ruby body with a medium creamy tan head. Sweet molassas aroma with light toastiness. Sweet molassas flavor with a creamy mouthfeel.

This is an excellent doppelbock and comparable to Celebrator. Surprisingly tall and thick head on this heavy brown beer. Aroma is primarily sweet malt, but there is also smoke and light caramel. Surprisingly thick, sweet and heavy, a great mouthfeel and great flavor. Sweet, but also very light smoke character. Some caramel. I expected a solid beer but this far exceeded by expectations.

Dark ruby color, small off-white head. Dark roasted aroma with dark fruits (plums) and hints of metal. Full-bodied. Sweetish: caramel, plums, hints of licorice and cream liquer - all typical elements of good doppelbocks, but this has less licorice and roastyness than eg. Ayinger. Alcohol is covered by sweetness, too.

Bottled. Mahogany colour, clear, brief head. Sweet and bready with rounded sticky mouthfeel. Flavours of syrupy dough, red apples, molasses and cardamom. Drier finish with a touch of metal. Being strangelyunrefined for a German beer it fails to lift. I guess Oetker takeovers are bad news for the quality...

Bottled (Thanks DerDoppelbock). Reddish amber colour, medium head, which vanishes quite fast. Aroma is big time caramel malts and some slight alcoholic kick. Flavour is malt, some slight alcohol in background. Slightly sticky palate, but very refreshing.

Re-rate 11/19/07: Bottle. Dark brown with a short-lasting small beige head. Dark malts aroma with caramel, some roastiness and chocolate and hints of alcohol. Sweet malty flavor with caramel and some bread. A caramelly sweet finish with hints of herbal hops. Medium-bodied. Not a great doppelbock, but very decent. 7/3/7/3/14=3.4

Deep dark beautiful chestnut colour with a firm, greyish yellow-crème head. Chocolate, dark leaves, malty, cedarwood (as pencil scrapings). Not very remarkable. Burnt/roasted notes on a rather uniformly sweet underlying flavour. Bit like crème brulée burnt sugar flavour; some chocolate and overripe, flat plums lurking in the background. Well bodied without becoming syrupy or thick. This is good: one can still drink this as a beer. There’s even a little tartness in the end. A bit flat, typical Grossbrauerei type Doppelbock, but the palate actually saves a lot. Dankeschön, Doppelbock!

Aroma is a little sweet & yeasty. Pours dark transparent brown. Initial tasty flavor that melds to slight bitterness. Finish lingers with a little rough alcohol. Yes, a typical doppelbock but not particularly enjoyable. However, this is smoother and better than Celebrator.
